UN force tries to evacuate Lebanese troops detained by Israeli forces

BEIRUT (AP) - United Nations peacekeepers were dispatched Friday to evacuate about 350 Lebanese soldiers and police detained by Israeli forces in Marjayoun after Israeli soldiers swept into the southern Lebanese town, the UN command said.

Two armoured vehicles from the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, a 2,000-member peacekeeping force deployed in southern Lebanon, headed to Marjayoun, which Israeli forces occupied on Thursday, "to facilitate" the withdrawal of the Lebanese force to government territory in the north.

But the UN unit, which made it to the Marjayoun barracks, was unable to leave with the Lebanese force because the roads out of the region were either blocked or destroyed.

UNIFIL spokesman Milos Strugar said an evacuation of the Lebanese troops was delayed because "it is not possible to leave the area at this point."

The UN statement said many local residents in civilian vehicles gathered in the town "with the intention of joining" the convoy of Lebanese police and army vehicles carrying some 350 military personnel.

On Thursday, Interior Minister Ahmed Fatfat said Israeli troops entered the garrison in Marjayoun in the afternoon "and asked to share it with Lebanese troops there."

He said the troops refused and wanted to leave, but the Israelis did not let them.

"We consider them captives," Fatfat said, adding that the government was trying to win their release.

Israel said the force was not detained but had been advised not to leave for its own safety.

Lebanese and Arab media reports said France and the United States intervened to arrange for the evacuation of the Lebanese troops.

There are more than 1,000 Lebanese troops in southern Lebanon conducting security duties. But Hezbollah guerrillas actually control of the south.

The government has pledged to send 15,000 troops to the border with Israel as part of a peace package to end one month of brutal fighting and bombardment by Israel and Hezbollah. Israel has insisted on staying in southern Lebanon until a robust international force is deployed, which could take weeks or months.

Sounds like the 350 Lebanese troops were..."INNOCENT BYSTANDERS"?

As if they didn't see or know what the Hezbollah militia was doing there?

Ladies and gentlemen...this is no way to fight a WAR! How many times is Israel expected to return to their corner for a standing 8 count?

DF allows 400 Lebanese security forces to leave Marjayoun

The IDF allowed 400 Lebanese security forces, trapped in Majayoun as a result of fire exchanges between Israel and Hizbullah, to leave the village.

A senior officer from IDF's Northern Command stated that the Lebanese forces appealed to the UN for help leaving the area. In response, the IDF agreed, although said that the Lebanese forces would be checked before moving north, to ensure that there were no Hizbullah terrorists among them. Earlier, it was reported that UN soldiers arrived at the village to assist Lebanese forces. (Hanan Greenberg)

This war is one for the ages. A not funny joke.

Hizbollah and it's army are Hessians hired by Lebanon...or they are 'friendly' invaders themselves who have designs of their own to control the country.

In a not so bizarro world, the 400 Lebanese soldiers would have assisted the Israelis clear the area of Hizbollah.

High-ranking officer: Hizbullah leave hiding because of food shortage

A high-ranking officer in IDF's Northern Command posited that many Hizbullah operatives are leaving their hiding places in recent days because of waning food supplies.

"Many Hizbullah cells hiding in southern Lebanon are coming out, most likely because their food and water resources have been depleted. As a result, there are many clashes between them and IDF forces in all arenas," he said. According to the officer, IDF forces operating in the areas struck six Hizbullah cells in recent days. Lebanon has functioned as two states since the 80s...both allied some of the time, but separate. If the Lebanese army had aided the Israelis, it would have meant that they declared war on Hez, and they aren't going to go there.

And thus the war.

Anyone watching the live Fox News internet stream? It just quit for me. Found out about it Wednesday night, but it appears the plug has been pulled. It was great to watch yesterday.
