A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted by police, Scotland Yard says.

It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.

During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.

Police believe the attacks would have been particularly targeted at flights from the UK to the US.

The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.

Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.

Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

Former Scotland Yard SPECIAL OPs officer says that none of us have anything at all to fear from The Patriot Act and NSA. And he's right. :-)

Providing that reasonable suspicion is carefully used, there's nothing wrong with what America and England does what they do, in regard of watching those who might be terrorists.

MI5, Scotland Yard, Pakistani Intelligence and our own NSA are those who were instrumental in foiling the terrorist plot on the planes.

I'm no chemist, and your query has probably been answered a dozen times (I'm too lazy too sift through 2300 posts) but my first thought was of the fuels used by the Germans in their Me163 rocket fighter; hydrogen peroxide (highly concentrated)and a hydrazine/methanol mix. If these two are mixed, it causes an immediate and violent explosion.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the Islamic terrorists are trying to figure out a way to make explosives from urine. If that should ever happen, we are all in a world of hurt.

You have to admit, some of these terorists are cunning and clever. They remind me of a guy I knew in college who was smart as tack but would pull an all-nighter to figure out a way to cheat on a test or exam.

My flight went well today. It was delayed, and there were mountains of unclaimed luggage. I opted to send my luggage home via an express freight service. There were National guard troops present at the departing and arrival airports. They did have ammunition in the magazines. There are additional layers of security as well. Tomorrow the MSM will run the sad stories of all of the delayed and "lost" luggage. It will likely take a few days for people to become used to either sending their luggage in advance, or arriving at the airport 3 to 4 hours in advance. Of course we could solve this issue and get commercial air travel back on track by profiling, yet political correctness will reign supreme. Many of my future trips will be on private charter, where they CAN and DO profile. It remains to be seen if commercial airlines will become the crime infested dangerous subways of the sky. I think the shareholders and frequent travelers will see things pragmatically. Mohammeds, Fatimas in hijab, and Achmeds were conspicuously absent from their normal TSA posts and the ticket counters. Made me wonder why.

I saw many dozens of the grey bins filled with perfumes, lipsticks, aftershave, chapstick, lotion, shampoo, and etc. No liquids or creams are allowed even near the checkpoints. The receptacles were being bagged up and labeled, and moved away at a very steady pace under surveillance. Likely that we will not hear about the results of the analysis, but there were very few middle-eastern people at the airports where I was today.
