Indicators observed by independent Iran watchers during the past week are raising the question that nuclear-seeking Iran is not merely playing a serious game of brinkmanship, but is actually preparing to strike at Israel, European and US interests.
Headlined "Iran declares war," a May 11 editorial in the New York Sun expressed the belief that a recent letter written by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which had been widely interpreted as a peaceful gesture, "is in fact a declaration of war."
According to the Sun, a coded message is contained in the closing section of the eight-page letter. While the rest of the message had been translated into English, the salutation in had not. It reads "Vasalam Ala Man Ataba'al hoda" and means "Peace only unto those who follow the true path."

It has as much validity as Iran's capability and intent. No more, no less. Iran might not be able to win an all-out war against Israel, but they can do a lot of damage before they are done.

We'd have to build the bombs first. Those are no longer made, no more exist in USA.

You know..... Iran and Iraq fought a long war to a stalement. And we marched to Baghdad in about a week. When it gets right down to it.... we could march to and through Teran anytime we choose. We could put their nutjob in the same cell as Saddam anytime we choose.
We heard all of the build up about how powerful the Iraqi army was before we took Baghdad. I rank all of this talk about Iran in that same category.

On the other hand, we don't often have so much heavy equipment and manpower so close to Iran. What a coincidence. And they say our intel is lousy. I've long thought that Iraq is just a stepping stone.

I don't believe it. Iran likes to keep the pot stirred. As a result, the price of oil remains at high levels giving the regime greater oil revenues, which helps them remain in power.

Do you suppose the people who want troops pulled out of Iraq right this moment would be satisfied if we moved them to Iran?

August 22 may see a nuclear strike from Iran against Israel, using an Iranian missile and a North Korean warhead. More to the point, since you mention these two worthy nations ...
I would not be at all surprised to see North Korea mount an attack on SK, on or about 22 August.

I've long thought that Iraq is just a stepping stone. Well, yes. Saddam needed taking out anyway, and where better to stash a large number of Good Guys than right smack in the middle of the salamikaze world? I'm continually amazed that the Pundit Class -- on both sides of the issue -- fail to take into account the larger strategic advantages of being in Iraq.

I don't think it has any validity. Iran needs Europe to stay out of things (i.e. not give the US or Israel carte blanche in regards to military actions) and can't afford an open war with Israel or the US.
Attacking the US or Europe would bring NATO into it (people forget, there are NATO forces operating all over Afghanistan, immediately after 9/11, and even up through today - the attack on the US activated a NATO military response).
Iran's leadership is crazy, but they aren't North Korea crazy.

I played out some ugly scenarios that could happen if this preemptive attack story is true one having our attention diverted because of a major 9/11-like attack on our soil by 11 Egyptians (yea those 11).
Man, I pray Im wrong.

They won't worry about the consequences to themselves or Iran and it's citizens if they nuke Israel . You are either with Allah, or you are against Allah. Are you more interested in worldly things or doing Allah's will???

and then level both syria & iran. For years, bragadocious FReepers have been talking about turning Afghanistan into glass, turning Iraq into glass. In today's world there is no justification. In the Vietnam era, DC didn't have the guts to fight a war. LBJ kept sucker-punching the enemy.
