Condi's 'New Middle East'

By Patrick Buchanan

"Things are as they are, and their consequences will be what they will be. Why then should we seek to be deceived?" -snip-

Think back. Had Reagan done to Lebanon, when half a dozen Americans were seized as hostages, what Israel has done, when two soldiers were taken hostage, Democrats would have denounced Reagan as a war criminal. Conservatives would have begged him to ease up.

Yet, almost to a man and woman, our politicians are falling all over one another to express their 100 percent support of what Israel has done to Lebanon. Even Israelis must feel a measure of contempt for this kind of groveling.

Indeed, in Israel, dissent against the blitzkrieg is rising, and the Olmert regime is being challenged and even condemned by courageous Israelis for letting the air force have a free hand to smash Lebanon. -snip-

The Israeli-American ace of trumps, raw military power, is still able to defeat armies and destroy states, but it has proven less effective in eradicating guerrillas, and counterproductive in changing Islamic hearts and minds.

If neither U.S. party is willing to show any independence of Israel, if America will not address the root causes of Arab animosity, and if we will not even negotiate with our enemies, we should probably pack up and get out of the Middle East. Before we are thrown out.

Conservatives would have begged him to ease up.

I'm not sure Pat has a right to speak for conservatives.

Hezbollah ignited the hostilities. But it was Israel that escalated to rain destruction on a people and nation that had not countenanced or condoned Hezbollah's provocation, but condemned it.

I would think that having the Lebanese Army joining the fight on the side of Hezzballah IS "countenancing or condoning" - but maybe that's just me.

if America will not address the root causes of Arab animosity,

Pat truly believes the "root cause of Arab animosity" is America's support for the lone outpost of civilization - Israel - in that otherwise barbaric region. .....as if the Islamists would be as tame as sheep if we stopped showing favoritism to our ally.

Buchanan despises Jews/Israel to such an extent that it blinds him to the true evil we face.

Ummm, let's see.

Iran didn't have the bomb when Reagan was in office. They have it now, and if so inclined to help Hezbollah, they can annihilate Israel today.

Pray tell, too, Pat, just what is the root cause of the problems in the Middle East?

"Two years and three months before November 2008, the Democratic Party has pulled out of the Bush coalition; two-thirds of the nation considers Iraq a mistake; and a majority wants the troops home."

We'll see how this strategy plays out for the Dems in '08 Pat. Maybe you can find a spot on the ticket.

'Comrade Wolf' and the mullahs
Worldnet Daily ^ | 5-12-06 | Pat Buchanan

In the 27 years since the Iranian Revolution, the United States has launched air strikes on Libya, invaded Grenada, put Marines in Lebanon and run air strikes in the Bekaa Valley and Chouf Mountains in retaliation for the Beirut bombing.

We invaded Panama, launched Desert Storm to liberate Kuwait and put troops into Somalia. Under Clinton, we occupied Haiti, fired cruise missiles into Sudan, intervened in Bosnia, conducted bombing strikes on Iraq and launched a 78-day bombing campaign against Serbia, a nation that never attacked us. Then, we put troops into Kosovo.

After the Soviet Union stood down in Eastern Europe, we moved NATO into Poland and the Baltic states and established U.S. bases in former provinces of Russia's in Central Asia.

Under Bush II, we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, though it appears Saddam neither had weapons of mass destruction nor played a role in 9-11.

Yet, in this same quarter century when the U.S. military has been so busy it is said to be overstretched and exhausted, Iran has invaded not one neighbor and fought but one war: an 8-year war with Iraq where she was the victim of aggression. And in that war of aggression against Iran, we supported the aggressor.

Hence, when Iran says that even as we have grievances against her, she has grievances against us, does Iran not have at least a small point? And when Russian President Putin calls Bush's America "Comrade Wolf," does he not have at least a small patch of ground on which to stand?

Continued at the link. Fair to say the US is a pretty *hitty country, abusing Iran. No reason to expect Israel to act any differently.

A comment about Iran Pat might want to delete from his May editorial whacking the US.

But if he [Iran] wants a war with Israel, he could have it tomorrow by launching rockets.

what Israel has done, when two soldiers were taken hostage,

How were they taken "hostage" Pat?

Israel was invaded by armed troops over an internationally recognized border while simultaneously rockets were fired on the civilian population.

You must have forgotten Pat.

You know what happened then Pat? What many readers here probably don't know either. An Israel tank tried to follow the invaders to rescue the soldiers. It was hit and four Israelis were killed.

Then Hesbolla mutilated the bodies, including but not limited to beheading, and took away some body parts.

Just Jews Pat, certainly no excuse for an Israeli blitzkrieg.

Does Pat know where he is at. In the past I've heard him state that the war was a mistake but if we leave a greater disaster would follow. Now he seems to be saying get out of the Middle East. Such a move would be absurd and would destabilize the region completely. We have no alternative but to stay the course. If we leave, a Shiite dominated government allied with Iran will result. We need to stay in there and bring about secular rule. If we don't we only assist Iran in its efforts to reestablish the Persian Empire. Secondly, you cannot negotiate with the likes of Hezbollah and Hamas since they will never accept the existence of Israel. They have only one agenda its "Get rid of Israel." That being the case I suggest we stay the course and wear down our opponents, the same tactic they hope to achieve against us, of course with the help of the American, "drive by media".

"Think back. Had Reagan done to Lebanon, when half a dozen Americans were seized as hostages, what Israel has done, when two soldiers were taken hostage, Democrats would have denounced Reagan as a war criminal. Conservatives would have begged him to ease up."

In point of fact, following the marine barracks bombing Reagan authorized the bombing and complete obliteration of 250 some odd Hezbullah terrorists who intelligence determined had gathered together in a target rich environment. Unfortunately, Caspar Weinberger ignored his commander in chief's order and Reagan was livid. And because of their long friendship Reagan didn't take Weinberger to the woodshed. These facts stand in stark contrast to what Weinberg penned in his book and to some extent the Ken Timmerman 2003 article. A few days ago Reagan's national security advisor, Robert "Bud" McFarlane confirmed Weinberger's insubordination indicating Weinberger told him it was because he didn't want to "upset our Arab friends". In the interview McFarlane was quite angry

Buchanan is intellectually dishonest.

Hezbollah's seizing of Israeli soldiers wasn't the cause of the war. It was merely the "last straw."

Israel has been attacked continuously by these anti-Semites and will continue to be attacked as long as it is feasible for the terrorists to do so.

The "land-for-peace" bargain is a fraud. The UN does not enforce the bargain. Israel must defend itself as best it can.
