I guess the greatest incongruity is not the women in uniform, but the girls standing at an ice cream counter, in civvies, with M-16s slung. Not exactly a common sight here in the States, but I suppose, all TOO common -- and necessary -- in Israel.

Does anyone know if there is a "draft" in Israel? If so, are women drafted, same as men?
Or perhaps their service is volunteer, same as in U.S.?
What is the length of their service?
Thanks

A friend of my brother's married an Israeli girl who's just lovely -- she was an officer in the army and is tough as nails.

Actually, this whole thread, and that pic in particular, gives it a sad undercurrent. They have to take their teenage daughters and place weapons in their hands to preserve their nation. Nonetheless, they are a strong nation for having the will to do it.

She caught my eye too. It looks like an old photo (hairstyle is 70s-ish).

I think every Jewish young person is required to serve in the military whether they are at war or not. Not a bad idea.
