I guess the greatest incongruity is not the women in uniform, but the girls standing at an ice cream counter, in civvies, with M-16s slung. Not exactly a common sight here in the States, but I suppose, all TOO common -- and necessary -- in Israel.
Actually, this whole thread, and that pic in particular, gives it a sad undercurrent. They have to take their teenage daughters and place weapons in their hands to preserve their nation. Nonetheless, they are a strong nation for having the will to do it.

Nonetheless, they are a strong nation for having the will to do it. Certainly that is a picture of girls who grew up too fast. But there's a strange grace to it too, a sort of "steel magnolia" glaze. I wonder if the spoiled brats in this country couldn't stand a little adversity to make them appreciate what they've got a little more.
Israel pays dearly -- and daily -- for its survival.
