100 Cheese Workers Win $208M Lottery

(CBS/AP) About 100 cheese-factory workers in the Wisconsin town of Saint Cloud have been celebrating — because they say they're $208 million richer.

Wisconsin state lottery officials say no one has officially stepped forward to claim Saturday's Powerball jackpot.

But a large contingent of employees from Sargento Cheese say they have the winning ticket locked in a safe.

Eric Heimermann is one member of the celebrating group. He told the Fond du Lac Reporter that the mostly second shift workers had chipped in $1 apiece to a pool to purchase lottery tickets.

Heimermann, 24, of St. Cloud, spoke with the newspaper in a telephone interview from Fat Boys Tavern in St. Cloud. The newspaper said many of the winners went to the tavern Sunday night to celebrate.

"I think everybody pretty much decided we're going to pay our bills and we're going to take it from there," he told the newspaper. "We're all going to work tomorrow. We still have a job to do."

It's not clear when the group will try to redeem the ticket. Lottery spokeswoman Jessica Iverson says it can take several days or weeks for a winner to come forward.

The winning numbers drawn Saturday night were two, three, nine, 48 and 50 and the Powerball was 23.

Interesting info.

Thanks. I had no idea lotteries give you the base amount of what should be required to give you the advertised amount in the future at a modest rate of return.

What a rip-off.

I learned something new.

Anybody with a decent set of brains could invest that amount and make much more than the 200 million anyway, previding they are young enough for a good time of return.

Several people in a small town go in together and win the lottery. Hmmm. Sounds like it might make for a good tv show...

I said a *good* tv show, not the one presently on NBC.

What would really be funny is if the winning ticket somehow got lost somewhere at the cheese factory and the employees were searching everywhere to find it - including the vats of cheese. Now that would make for great television.

It all boils down to this easy formula: If you want to know the approx. lump sum payout after all taxes have been paid, multiply the advertised lottery jackpot by 0.3; i.e.,

The Lump Sum Payout = 0.3 x Jackpot

In this case, each player's advertised take is $2M. So

The Lump Sum Payout for each player = 0.3 x $2M, or

               $600K, approximately.

The upshot of all this is, if you ever win a two million dollar jackpot, every relative and friend you didn't even know you had is going to come to you and get all angry at you and not understand why you can't give him a lousy $200K. After all, that is only a lousy 10% of what you won, right? :-)

Lord have mercy, they have rednecks up there in Wisconsin?

A typical hillbilly from Tennessee would take the money and buy a trampolene, to put in the yard where the trailer is.

Then, they'd get one of them BIG satelitte dishes, to put right out next to the road, so everybody could see it and know how advanced said RN are.

Throw in a BIG shopping trip to Wal-Mart, to get one of them big balloon like swimming pools, some plastic flowers to plant in the old toilet seat we threw out last year when we had to buy a new one, a couple of ceramic frogs, deers, and NASCAR creations, and we'd be the some of the most advanced, cultered folks in my neighborhood (grin).

"LOL! I'm the first to graduate college in my family since before the Civil War. I've seen too many of my own family, friends and neighbors who have come into a little money and immediately blown it ... a bright colored ski boat with their favorite NASCAR driver's number on it seems to be a big thing these days. Most people who have never been able to buy something really nice for themselves just aren't able to resist, when the opportunity arises. It's happened to many lottery winners before, as well as many pro sports figures, and it'll happen again. You think that's elitist?"

Heck no, you 'ain't no elitist. You are probably my pastor, or insurance agent.

Them people you are talkin about sound like they won the local FLW bass tournament.

Just kiddin.

An honest to goodness, true angler would invest in their own plastic bait company, a top of the line fishfinder, and a pyschic.

What you talkin about -- corndogs?

That's a carnival thing.

Cornbread, cornbread sticks, or hushpuppies, well, that's Southern.

Don't get too excited.....

It's only about $550K per person, after taxes.

Ah...ok....i'd take it...

Out of 100 people, only about 50 of them will get screwed out of every penny.
NOBODY should go public about winning, when you have the option of going through a trust or foundation, as you do w Powerball.

I think it would be the top tax rate of around 36%, plus in Wisconsin the top tax rate is an additional 7.5%.

I think the IRS taxes it as a bonus, or award, and not as straight income. You are most surely correct about the state taxes, although I do not know what WI charges, it's highly unlikely they will not take their 'cut' of the prize. ;)

Insurance agent: "Yes Mr. Sargento as you'll see in your business insurance policy we do offer 'Mass Workers Winning Lottery" protection for a small extra fee...
It covers costs of temporary workers for up to two months, counseling for cussed-out supervisors and managers, depression counseling for workers who didn't participate in the lottery..."
