A report on the first day of Camp Casey III action for peace in Crawford. Cindy, back to the same spot near the President's ranch that last year made history.
The August vigil at Camp Casey 3 is starting a bit earlier than originally planned. Cindy Sheehan decided to arrive on the anniversary of her first attempt to meet with George Bush and get an explanation from him about why her son Casey died in Iraq.
Camp Casey has moved to a new location. It is a 5-acre piece of wooded property less than a mile from the Crawford Peace House. The August 2006 vigil activities will take place there.
Gravel roadways have already been plowed into place, the field was cleared and mowed, large rocks and fallen trees were moved, tree trunks have chainsawed into benches for sitting and chatting. The memorial field of crosses is in place with an American flag planted in the center.
Campers have already arrived. Many of the people who came to Camp Casey last year are here, ready to step into their roles of support to make this vigil work again. New faces are also here. People who could not be here last year now made sure that they could participate in the action and the experience.
Cindy arrived in Crawford this morning for a press conference at Camp Casey 3, talking about the war and the need for peace. Then we began to shuttle people out to Camp Casey 1 to re-create Cindy's march of a year ago.
About 70 people and several vehicles set out from Camp Casey 1 to march to the Bush Ranch. Marchers were young and old, including a Boy Scout in full uniform and a 3-year old boy walking with his daddy. Marchers carried signs asking for an end to the Iraq war and other messages standing up for peace. Shuttle drivers handed out ice cold water to walkers and others sprayed them down with cold water in hand-held spray bottles. Other shuttles brought more people while the march was in progress.
The press drove along in their vehicles, as well, photographing the marchers and lined up at the checkpoint to document the group's arrival.
Cindy asked to be allowed to proceed on to the Bush Ranch but, as was expected, was denied entry. After making comments to the press, Cindy and some of the group crossed over to the opposite corner where chairs were set up in a shady spot. There were more questions from the media, more singing and chanting "Peace Now!"
Eventually we shuttled back to the Peace House to cool off and relax before dinner. We will talk to new arrivals, new people, and talk to old acquaintances. We are all looking forward to this vigil and the new Camp Casey.
We are home. Cindy is home. We are a family once again.
The temperature has bounced around during the daytime hours between 95 to 102 degrees in the last couple of weeks. There is a rumor of a rainstorm tonight, and the gathering clouds and greyness of the sky suggests this might actually happen.
Cindy brought the rain last year, so maybe history is repeating itself!
We know that Bush has not spent nearly as much time vacationing in Crawford as he usually does since Cindy's arrival last August.
So now he is the "Cut and Run" president....running from the voice of the people.

I think not. Self awareness is not one of Code Pink's more prominent traits.

Erm, no. Cindy's home is in California. The rest of you nutjobs come from all over the country to join her in her annual ritual of stalking the president. You're not winning any converts to your cause with this bizarre behavior.
It's creepy.
OTOH, aren't you glad you aren't suffering the same insanity as Mother Sheehan? Even if you agreed with her, you can't call it a "life" she's living.
And it must be noted that more than a few of them are from the obscenely wealthy Fairfield County,CT hometown of Comrade Ned Lamont.

Very appropriate use of words. This woman is sick and should receive.............
1) Restraining Order.
2) Updated prescription for her meds; current doseage is definitely not enough. 3) Time in a Psychiatric Ward for evaluation.
4) Combination of all of the above.

I think they need to work on their grammar. The text of this reads like an out of breath free association rant.
