godfathers is the BEST pizza I have ever eaten--better than LaRosas, Pizza hut--or anything else. In fact--it is so different from most pizzas, that it should be called something else entirely!!

Bensonhurst Neighborhood(Brooklyn)

The problem is that you can get some really, really awful pizza there, too.

First thing to do when you walk into a pizzeria in Bensonhurst: look for the old, Italian guy. You might have to settle for middle-aged Italian guy or a handful of 20-30-somethings. If they're young, you want a bunch of them. That means it's a family thing and not just some kid they hired.

Everyone went to Neil's on 20th Ave. So many that you had to order your Friday night pizza on Thursday night. So many that a guy in front of me asked for two slices and Neil said "no slices" without even looking up. The guy laughed at the joke. Except it wasn't a joke. Neil looked up, the guy was still there, "No slices. Get outa here." Neil retired (he earned it) and a couple of (I think) Koreans took over. Aint the same.

Then there was the cab ride I took home. I paid the driver and he asked, "Where can I get good pizza here." I told him, "GO to the corner. You see a pizzeria -- don't go there. Make a left and go a block to Steve's."

Six months later, there was a sign in the window: "Original Steve is back!" I tried the pizza. Ummm, can I get Fake Steve? (The place is a Russian deli now.)

To each his own. Some swear by Lenny's (as seen in Saturday Night Fever, still there); others like Mike's across from St. Dominic's or any of a few dozen others.

I'll drive over to Da Vinci myself. Scary, one of the guy's knows me now, recognizes my voice on the phone, too, I think, but he definitely knows me as soon as I walk in.
