Some leaders of Buffalo's black community say they consider the new name for the city's minor-league basketball team, the Silverbacks, offensive and racially insensitive.
They say a silverback - an adult male gorilla - is an inappropriate nickname for a team with a large number of black players because bigots have referred to blacks as "gorillas," "apes" and "monkeys."...

I know we're supposed to be "Politically Correct". Maybe any sports team should check with minorities orgainization before naming a team.
I heard the University of Hawaii Rainbows could change their name since Rainbow has become a symbol of the homosexual community. They will get in trouble if they do, because it's not gays who complained, it's some others who were concerned about the image of the team. So then if they took away the Rainbow name they would be accused of putting gays in the closet by putting that name back in the closet, you can imagine what people would say.
Heck, so many names can be offensive in some way:
Boston Celtics, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves, Washington Redskins, Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles for the PETA folks, it just goes on and on. Dallas Cowboys is probably offensive because of the cowboy and indian games in the past.
New England Patriots is offensive because patriotism has been co-opted by the Bush Administration, according to some. Go ahead, pick a team, and I bet you can find some way that its name if offensive.
All bigots have breathed oxygen.
The continued use of oxygen, by "some leaders of Buffalo's black community", is hypocritical.

Did they used to be called the Rainbow Warriors, until political correctness made warrior a bad word? Or am I thinking about the one good thing the French have done in the last 50 years, sinking the Greenpeace vessel of that name?
