Heat Waves Follow Hottest Six Months on Record
With record-breaking heat around the country, fish--and the people that love to catch them--are suffering.
Not only is the fun of sitting out in the summer sun on a boat, on the shore or standing in a river beginning to lose some of its appeal, but these high temperatures are also stressing out fish, prompting midday fishing bans (in Montana), bass that won't bite (in Florida), and potentially later and smaller salmon runs (in Oregon and Washington).
This summer's heat is coming on the heels of an announcement in July from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that January through June of 2006 was the hottest first half of a year on record in the United States.
What we are witnessing is a trend, not an aberration. Anglers across the country are rightly concerned about the affects this warming trend is having--and will continue to have--on fishing.
How can you protect America's fishing tradition for future generations?
Right now, the U.S. Congress has a number of opportunities in front of them that call for a reduction in global warming pollution.
If you hunt or fish, add your name to the list of sportsmen and women calling on the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus to take the lead in stopping global warming.
How are you handling the heat? Is it affecting any of your favorite recreation spots? My coworker Derek just posted a blog about how he returned from fly-fishing on the Little Blackfoot River in Montana to find the river had closed just days later due to record water temperatures.

My husband is a great bass fisherman and in the 50+ years he has fished, has never found it productive to fish in the summer in the heat of the day. So he doesn't bother - he just waits until evening, then kills 'em. To make this a global warming problem, is pure crisis mongering.

Try fishing off the coast of Antartica, I've heard it got down to 180 below zero. Coldest ever. Someone has got the hood pulled over us. In Kansas the summer of 35 was hotter than 2006

Fishing is better than it has been in the past 25 years, all along the Mississippi Coast. Boating, fishing, water skiing, jet skis etc are appearing in lakes, rivers, and in the Gulf in record numbers.
We have had hotter summers too! Average daytime highs in the last month have been in the low to mid 90's. I have seen it hit 110 degrees in years past (for days), and without any "heat index" curve. global warming is just a left-wing research grant manufacturing machine!

That's strange, we caught 14 perch and bluegill today and that doesn't count the ones we had to throw back cause they were too little! We started at about 7:30 this morning and quit about 12:30 only because we ran out of worms!
So my empty stringer can now be blamed on Global Warming and not the fact that I might be using the wrong bait/lure/technique/location. The idiots of the world continue to get stupider.
These have been called the "dog days of summer" for a LONG time for a reason- It isn't so comfortable to be outside in the heat of the day, fish tend to "turn off", and so forth. Salmon runs are a cyclical thing anyway...and have been for a lot longer than folks have been screaming about global warming.
What utter crap.
Try fishing at other times besides high noon.
The walleye fishing here has been most rewarding, and they're not caught at noon.
This idiot writer couldn't catch a cold standing naked in a snowstorm.
I hope you all know I don't believe global warming is keeping me from catching fish -- I just posted this garbage for a laugh.
