LANSING, Mich. (AP) Republican U.S. Senate hopefuls Michael Bouchard and Keith Butler plan to crisscross Michigan over the next few days in anticipation of Tuesday's primary election showdown.
Bouchard, Oakland County's sheriff and a former state lawmaker, took walking tours Friday with his family in Bloomfield Hills, Mason and Kalamazoo.
Meanwhile, Butler, a Troy minister and former Detroit city councilman, campaigned with former Oklahoma congressman and college football star J.C. Watts. They stopped in Warren, Troy, Livonia, Lansing and Grand Rapids.
Both candidates plan plenty of similar stops across the Lower Peninsula headed into Tuesday's primary. The winner faces incumbent U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a Democrat, in November.
Both Republican candidates have stepped up their television advertising this week in a late bid to inspire undecided voters.
Bouchard's new ad features humor and his daughter, Mikayla, to emphasize his law enforcement and lawmaking background.
Bouchard has emphasized his experience throughout the campaign, arguing that homeland security and disaster response are among the most important issues facing the nation.
``We don't have any time for people to be trained on the job or to take time to learn it,'' Bouchard said after mingling with visitors to the Ingham County Fair. ``I live it. I know it.''
The Bouchards popped into barber shops and ice cream parlors on their walk through Mason before heading to the fairgrounds, chatting up prospective voters.
Butler, founding pastor of 21,000-member Word of Faith International Christian Center in Southfield, also has advertisements on statewide TV this week headed into the primary.
Butler and Watts appeared at a Lansing church with Michigan Republicans including Attorney General Mike Cox, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers of Brighton, state Sen. Alan Cropsey of DeWitt and former U.S. Senate candidate Jerry Zandstra.
They told several dozen Butler supporters that many voters are undecided and hard work in the next few days could decide the election. Butler is hoping to get support from independents and Democrats as well as Republicans.
``Our supporters are extremely motivated,'' Butler said.
Butler says a fresh approach is needed in Washington. He says he would be a departure from career politicians working for special interests.

BUMP
Bouchard for Senate.
Butler for Lieutenant-Governor.
Dangerously Incompetent for Retirement.
I still have hopes for this race, even though August isn't turning out to be a good month for Republicans.
I think the Republicans are going to wipe the floor with the democrats.
