You are probably right. the army is key to everything as in most dictatorships.Whomever they support, will rule, if they fold so does the country. My big question is whether or not there is someone in the army with a desire for power, and just how brutal he is willing to be to get there.

What the Cubans are going to have to watch out for is Chaves stepping in. IMHO if that happens, WE INVADE!

The heck with cigars. Cuba is the reason Americans are overweight. If we were using sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, we wouldn't be fat.
parsy, who wasn't fat when he drank real cokes.

13 August Fidel turns 80. Anybody know the 'over/under'? Something interesting. I heard yesterday (I believe on Rush) that supposedly Castro had requested that his birthday no be recognised until december.

While Castro may very well be dead or incapacitated, it's also important to remember that he could very well be alive and attempting to tempt the U.S. into over-extending our resources...IMHO, the only way that US Forces move into Cuba (in the near term) is if another outside force threatens to do so. After Fidel's immediate successor, perhaps.

There is already a lot of investment in Cuba, many of the Europeans have built hotels and the like on the coast. One thing I hope does not happen is that Cuba becomes another satellite for the narcos in Columbia like Haiti has.Castro already has reportedly smugle lots of drugs for who knows who.
The Columbian narcos bought up some prime real estate in Haiti where I used to work called Petionville,it's straight up the mountain from port au prince.
Now they use the area for drug distributions to the us and elsewhere.

Why not invite Raul to the US, and then take him hostage?

It might be more than one. You might get regional commanders splitting off since there is a large militia force locally raised & organized. Things could get very nasty, and if they do, you might see one heckuva boat lift.

Turn the high fructose corn syrup into ethanol and pass the sugar.

Why not invite Raul to the US, and then take him hostage?Fat chance. When Fidel used to come to the US, the Park West crowd took him to Bloomingdales.

It's all uncharted from here on.
Other than tourism cuba had income from farming, sugar, other stuff, a few cigars not like in the past however,(they destroyed their soil form overproduction) drug smuggling, counterfeiting, and soon oil drilling.

The best book on Cuba I ever read was "Against All Hope" by Armando Valladares.

I was on a flight to Korea once, and had a can of Coke, under license from Singapore. It was excellent, and probably due in part to sugar in lieu of corn syrup. It sorta pissed me off, because Coke is about as American as it gets, and "our" Coke is a pretty sick imitation these days. I think "they" have watered down the syrup too. I've heard that kosher coke uses sugar, but I'm not jewish so no idea where or when I could get it anyway. I'm surprised there's not a market for it outside that. There's a specialty pop I can get with all the old-time flavors that is excellent - blackberry, root beer, grape, sarsparilla, and uses sugar of course.

Cuba nationalized a bunch of oil refineries back in the day, I'm betting somebody is going to want their stuff back here shortly.
