OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Oklahoma starting quarterback Rhett Bomar will not play for the Sooners this season following an investigation by the team, according to a television report.
Oklahoma confirmed that two players had been dismissed by the team but did not identify them. The school said in a statement that the players violated NCAA rules by working at a private business and taking ``payment over an extended period of time in excess of time actually worked.''
Oklahoma City television station KWTV reported that Bomar, who set an Oklahoma freshman record with 2,018 passing yards after taking over as the Sooners' starter in the second game last season, was one of the two players who had been permanently dismissed.
``We spend a considerable amount of time addressing our players regarding their personal conduct and the NCAA rules,'' head coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. ``They know exactly what we expect from them. Ultimately, they have to make right decisions. The same holds true for our boosters. When they do not, the consequences are serious, and we will not tolerate this behavior.
``Our team and university actions are necessary because of the intentional participation and knowledge of the student athletes in these violations,'' Stoops said.
A top-rated recruit out of high school, Bomar redshirted his first season while 2004 Heisman Trophy winner Jason White completed his career. Bomar lost a quarterback competition to Paul Thompson last fall, but was named the starter after the Sooners lost to TCU in the first week.
He started Oklahoma's final 11 games and completed 54 percent of his passes, while throwing 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Oklahoma finished 2005 by winning six of its final seven games, including a victory against Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.
``I firmly believe that our program is stronger than any individual player and that a championship program cannot compromise its values,'' Stoops said in the statement.
So...you are saying he's had "many, many DUI" ( meaning multiple "Driving Under Influence"..) charges.
And you are sticking to that?
Let me ask you...
According to you..how many has he had?
I'm not meaning to be augmentative, but when you make a charge like that...You ought to be sure of your facts.
My mother-in-law seems pretty nice the first time you meet her too.............
ROFLOL!!!
Psst. They're talking about football, not basketball. We've got a good shot at the hoops this time around and have had some really good recruiting lately. But I don't think Coach Fraaaan can pull a decent season out of his hat.
Many years ago I worked for this Software Manager Good Ole Boy from Oklakoma. He hired two grads from the University of Texas. In a bar in Denver one night, they were on his case about how the largest group of players on the University of Oklahoma football team were from Texas. This went on for a while. Finally my boss sits back, takes a long hit on his Budweiser, and says, " It's a shame those boys had to go out of state to get a good education." Shut them right up. I laugh everytime I think of this.
As a Longhorn fan, I want to post how impressed I've been with the Sooners over the last few years. They have become a class organization, both on and off the field. It's hard to kick a starting QB off the team. Under their current regime, except for last year, they've also looked awfully good against my Horns. Hope they have someone in the wings that can keep them winning, and keep the annual Red River shootout as exciting as it's been the last few years.
"have become" - where have you been?
I didn't know -- sorry. :-(
WWLS says it happened last summer when it was under different ownership. the new owner is trying like hell to distance himself from it all.
Oops. Bad bull, bub. It's YELL leader.
(FWIW, Perry was a much better yell leader than he has been governor.)
Oklahoma, during the Switzer era, wouldn't have done this. After that, they cleaned up, but weren't the powerhouse of old. They've done something very rare in college football, built a very competitive team without breaking all the rules.
I'm a Husker, and I have tremendous respect for the OU program. My condolences. Stoops is good coach, OU is a good program; I take no comfort in this development
That is just awesome.
OK - thanks. I didn't know the timing, which is why I was trying to get it straight. That makes sense, then.
How do you know what OU would or wouldn't have done "during the Switzer era"? The things that happened in 1973-74 happened under Chuck Fairbanks and what happened in 1988 had more to do with an NCAA vendetta against OU and "micro-scrutiny" of OUr program than anything else.
I witnessed it and dealt with it firsthand and it was *real.*
Hook Em Horns! I'm laughin my ass off.
And, they had to put down artificial turf at their stadium to keep those " Yell Leaders " from grazing.
