Arnold's Truthful Talk on Immigration
San Diego, Calif., Union-Tribune ^ | August 2, 2006 | Ruben Navarrette

Posted on 08/02/2006 6:02:13 AM PDT by PDR

We teach our children that, if they tell the truth, they won't get into trouble.

It didn't work out that way for California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who, during a series of town hall meetings last week, put his finger on an unpleasant -- but undeniable -- facet of the immigration debate and got pummeled for it by right-wing talk radio hosts and bloggers who can't accept the truth.

Schwarzenegger warns that we are entering "a dangerous area.'' He thinks we shouldn't blame those who want to come to America but rather the federal government, which is "not securing our borders.'' In an interview with the editorial board of The San Diego Union-Tribune before the town hall meetings, he called illegal immigration "a self-inflicted wound.'' Along with 70 percent of California voters in a recent Field Poll, he supports comprehensive reform that includes secure borders, guest workers and legalization of undocumented immigrants.

Schwarzenegger told the newspaper that he believes in redemption and thinks the American people do as well. They "like to see that you have done things (to make up) for the mistake you made -- because we all make mistakes,'' he said. Above all, the governor wants to elevate the tenor of what has become a nasty public debate and see it conducted "in a civil way without prejudice and without hatred.''

Later, after meeting with angry constituents who yelled slogans such as "stop the invasion,'' Schwarzenegger told reporters the encounter was "pretty much the first time I had seen the intensity of prejudice.''

No, what Arnold is doing is race pandering.

He is calling American citizens racists and bigots because they are asking for the laws to be enforced, and that no special dispensation ibe given to those who have broken and are breaking the laws of this country.

Speaks truth to power? Cut me a break. The power brokers are the ones who want the illegals here. The regular joes who bear the brunt of the impact of illegal immigration are the ones speaking up.

Oh, well, I guess an outright falsehood is an improvement over your normal tactic of playing the race card.

"Get real. Prejudice -- and its cousins, racism and xenophobia -- are intrinsic to the immigration debate, just as they have been in every immigration debate since the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. When people deny this, I always ask them to pinpoint the moment in American history when this great nation got over the tendency to make the debate about keeping out specific groups of people. They can't -- because it never did." -- Ruben Navrette, from the same article.

The term "illegal immigration" refers to, well, illegal immigrants. The only ones playing the race card are those who want amnesty.

No, no, no. You don't understand. They didn't break any laws, they made "mistakes" and "we all make mistakes", don'tcha know.

Schwarzenegger told the newspaper that he believes in redemption and thinks the American people do as well. They "like to see that you have done things (to make up) for the mistake you made -- because we all make mistakes," he said.

If this is the first time Arnold has been aware of the "intensity of the predudice" he really does live in a gilded cage. And is apparantly completely out of touch with the sentiments of his constituents.

PDR=PrettyDarnedRacist So it Mexicans Uber Alles for you? What makes them better than Mongolians, Indians, Jamaicans, Philipinos, South Africans and others who have been waiting Legally to enter the US, some for 25 years? You are the racist, PDR.

The only good thing about Arnold is that he was more to the Right than Gray-out Davis.

He wouldn't be surprised that, in a recent poll by the Pew Hispanic Center, 54 percent of Hispanics think the debate over immigration reform has worsened discrimination against them.

Gosh, I have had enough of what the stupid "Arab street" thinks; now we are starting to get this "what the Hispanic street thinks" shite?

Gag me with a spoon.

I don't think Ruben Navarrette has ever written a truthful, well-argued essay in his life. He wants mass immigration, specifically from Latin America, but will never come out and say that.

"Arnold speaks truth to power and power doesn't like it?"

ROFLMAO

I almost hit the "abuse" button.

The only response your inane post warrants is my tagline.

Now we all know what "PDR" stands for, Pretty Damn Ridiculous

three points for cleverness but I'm sorry - time has run out and you just have not amassed enough points to pass our champion. But thanks for playing -- we have a lovely home version of our game for you as a consolation prize.

I don't put much stock in the Pew Center polls and I wish the political and media class didn't either...
