ACLU Accuses Black Mayor Of Racial Profiling
The Associated Press ^ | August 1, 2006 | AP

The national American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday accused the city's black mayor of civil rights violations including racial profiling in his crusade to stem crime in Mississippi's capital city.

The accusations against Mayor Frank Melton and police are based on complaints from people who say they were pulled over on the basis of their race and searched without probable cause, the ACLU's national racial profiling coordinator, King Downing, said at a news conference.

"For me to leave my office and come into one of the states means that there is a very serious problem," said Downing, who is based in New York. "There are problems here that it's going to take the attention of the nation in order to solve."

"....based on complaints from people who say they were pulled over on the basis of their race and searched without probable cause..."

Officer: How long have you been driving a Lexus?

Driver: Oh, about 20 minutes.

That's just never a good answer.

does he profile on the types of children he hugs, or has police cars stop for hugs?

folks should realize there is a LOT to this mayor besides being tough on crime, though it is typical of the ACLU to do this. In jackson city limits, virtually all the crime he is working on is black, and the city itself is highly majority black.

typical aclu lunacy.

Jackson, Ms. is well on its way to becoming another New Orleans, sans the good music and fantastic food. I wish Mayor Melton the very best in his efforts.

I like Lafayette's food better. Which is one of the reasons why I'm moving there after I graduate.

This guy doesnt have a swelled head does he??

He actually had to lower himself to go into the field, probably because he knew when they came down on a black mayor the Crap would hit the fan.

May God help us all.

Nowhere in this article about racial profiling does it print the specific race that the black mayor is accused of racial profiling.

Is the writer of this article afraid of being accused of racial profiling?

The World's gone mad.

I had some great swamp rat gumbo in Lafayette! Nice to hear from you -- help me hope for some rain up here in NELA, the cotton is starting to wilt.

It's raining on and off today here in Metarie.

I'd really like to do a boudin run some time soon; just drive up to Best Stop to pick up a pound or so of boudin and cracklins. Add some Abita and I'm set.

Forget Lafayette, Lake Charles has much better food :) It has the best of creole, cajun, and southern food.
