Monday, July 31, 2006 Was Qana Staged? Cont'd [Jonah Goldberg] A giant banner denouncing Rice and the "Qana massacre" might have been made a bit too quickly. I don't want to get too far out ahead on this, but I know we've got a zillion printer-type folks among our readers. Do you guys think such a banner could be made in 2-4 hours (particularly in a supposedly war-ravaged area)? A designer could throw it together in probably 15 minutes or so, but the longest part would be the printing. Notice how deep the reds and blacks are - this means they didn't just bust it out. I wouldnt be surprised if that job itself (requiring special equipment, as it looks to be printed on canvas or nylon, not merely paper) took 6 hours simply to print. Also, that puppy would be expensive. Update II: From a reader: Nope. Not possible in 2 hours to design, typeset, print, assemble and transport to the site. 24 hours if you're really good to do all the above. I say that as an career commercial artist of 18 years now. Update III: From another reader: called a close friend who has a very large printing company in NY with the question.  he called out to one of his technicians as to how long a color 30 foot banner would take to produce.  the response was that it would have to be done by a special machine and that machine would take "5 to 6 hours."     by the way, their rather enormous, state of the art (less than 6 months old) facility doesn't even have the equipment necessary to do it.  so make a guess as to what's available in a war-ravaged area...   Posted at 5:29 PM

If they have billboards in Lebanon or Syria then someone has one of these superwide billboard injet printers. They are not that expensive and this is not the only company who makes them.

Some think it was shipped by Fed-Ex from Howard Deans' office but the evidence although compelling is still inconclusive. Fed-Ex has no comment.

I think the question before this august body is: was this banner produced on a moment's notice? I have not heard any persuaive argument that it was "impossible", it does appear to be unlikely.

Certainly, Hezbollah has shown that they would not scruple at doing something like this.

Some have suggested that the dead were actually transported from a morgue in Tyre and that there appeared to be very little recovery activity. The "rescuers" do seem to be making more effort at displaying corpses than rending aid. Also the bodies do not appear to be fresh.

I wonder why there aren't any injured. Usually in a building collapse there appear to be about as many nonfatal injuries as fatal. All the victims on offer are dead, Jim. Where are the ones with broken arms or serious internal injuries, where are the walking wounded?

They do have the technology. Until I read Wikepedia on them I thought they were simply a bunch of scum cave dweller types. A closer analogy would be if our very own liberals had an army in the US who have control over papers, news, politicians etc.

I would say that banner is no more than 16' x 32' (512 sq ft and I am being generous on the size of it) - so no more than 15 minutes to actually print out on the superwide inklet printer I mentioned above which can do 2240 sq ft in one hour.

The answer is the large part of the banner probably was prepared beforehand. The real question is could the bottom have been added in a short time. As an accountant who prepared numerous documents using scissors, white-out and transparent tape back before Word and modern printers, I would not be ready to say a previous prepared poster could not be modified. I would be more persuaded if the area mentioning Qana were the large part.

Lebanon has advertising billboards, so they probably just Photo-shopped the image and took it to the local billboard printer there.
