TEL AVIV A group claiming to operate out of Syria took credit today for what it said was an attack against Israeli troops operating near the Syria-Israel border, according to a source in Syrian President Bashar Assad's Ba'ath party.
The claim preceded statements from Assad today warning Syria would not be deterred from helping Lebanon.

Excellent. Let the house cleaning commence.
MEMO
Hello Syria,
Welcome to the fight. Thanks for proving President Bush right in that yuo have always been backing the enemy and now rear your ugly head.
Warm regards,
The Country of Israel
Go ahead. Make my day. Any other takers? Iran?
Excellent. At last a pre-text for Israel to take on Assad, as if they didn't have plenty already.
Don't you just love it when these bozos can't wait to boast about their evil deeds.
Until Israel confirms it, I'm putting it into the meaningless rhetoric catetgory.
I hope the Israelis don't exhibit the restraint they've shown with Hezbollah if it comes to a shooting war.
Syria is 'Crusin for a Bruzin' (sp).
I just read on another site that Israel has said 7-8 times since this war started that they no intention of going into Syria or attacking Syria. Could someone please explain to me why is it that the US (we know Syria has the WMD Sadaam hid, we know they've been allowing terrorists to cross their border into Iraq to kill our soldiers) and Israel are holding back knocking these guys into the next century? I humbly plead ignorance. Thanks for any input from anybody.
The land mine that exploded? In Syrian territory? Some claim.
That's easy...keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer.
We know what we know, and what we know is nobodys business but ours.
That's why the media and liberals are often to referred to as "useful idiots".
The conventional idea is after a lost war (Syria would lose any conventional war with Israel badly - a non-conventional war all bets are off, but then Damascus would probably not exist any longer) Assad and the Baath regime would fall - and you would probably have some kind of Islamist regime à la Iran take over power.
That's why both the US and Israel are trying to avoid dragging Syria into this, although it is well known that they've had and still have their dirty fingers in the Lebanese pie.
A whole world will crash down on Syria if the supposedly moved Iraqi WMD chemicals start to be used from Syria.
I'm waiting for that shoe to drop by the moment.
Call has gone out just now for more reserves. Might as well since nobody in much of the north can go to their daily job anyway.
The Syrians have their own home made Chemical WMD Scud C/D missiles that can reach Israel. Hundreds of scuds. The U.S. cannot call the shots between the two right now. Israel and Syria are in a MAD standoff. Fighting each other through a proxy Lebanon. Somewhat similar to how we fought the Communist in Korea and Vietnam. Saddam's old WMD toys only add to the tensions between the two. Syria might have been able to achieve a Biological WMD capability with Saddam's old toys. I think this is why there is silence from Bush on the WMD issue. To admit that they escaped to Syria, would bring to light in the public knowledge the fact that Syria already has a Chemical WMD component of their own and they are already in a MAD standoff with Israel. That raises the stakes much higher and exposes just how strong the Iranian/Syrian/Hezbollha hand is.
" and you would probably have some kind of Islamist regime à la Iran take over power. "
And how would Syria act different than it does now?
