A leading Republican senator urged US President George W. Bush to call for an immediate ceasefire in the war between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon.
"The sickening slaughter on both sides must end now. President Bush must call for an immediate ceasefire. This madness must stop," Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel, a possible candidate in the 2008 presidential election, said on the Senate floor.
The Bush administration has been under pressure from Arab and European states to press Israel into halting its offensive, but has received relatively limited pressure from US lawmakers -- especially those in his own party -- to do the same.
Hagel said the US link to Israel was a "special and historic one." "But, it need not and cannot be at the expense of our Arab and Muslim relationships," he said.

So, after November's election, we'll have two years of leading repubs bashing the previous six years of policy for the hearts and minds of America?
Bingo!
Up-Chuck Hagel only became a "top Republican" when he started bashing the president.
The fastest way to get "the madness to stop" is for us to obliterate Tehran, destroy the Iranian military and kill the mullahs and Ahmanutjob. The Syrian Baath and Hezbollah would wither on the vine without their puppet masters and the war on terror would be much advanced toward victory.
I think that's what it will take and nothing less will ever solve the problem.
Can't we kick Hagel out of the party?
'Sickening slaughter'? How about the sickening attack on Israeli civilians? Not to mention enforcing a cease fire between a modern democratic state and a gang of thugs would elevate Hezbollah to a level they do not deserve. They're killers and they need to be killed.
Predictable.
How could anyone this stupid get elected to the Senate? Oh wait a tic.... I guess he used Boxer and Murray for models!
You are correct
This guy agrees with you Chuck! http://www.myspace.com/hippy100
Hagel, sit down and shut up.
Who is running against him in the Republican primary? I would also like to contribute to get him defeated.
Wondering the same thing myself.
I guess a Republican is only 'prominent' in the press when they agree with libs/Rats.
Give me a break...
Hagel needs to get a grip on something he can comprehend...
maybe junior high football...
This from the same senator who was critical of our engagement in Iraq because he considered it an inappropriate extension of our foreign policy?
I knew it was effin' Hagel just by the headline of this article
Yes, the Muslims and Arabs love us so much we wouldn't want to ruffle their feathers.
Chuck Hegel is a pathetic idiot. He has become like Traitor Kerry and others who are supporting the terrorist enemies of the American people. I am ashamed to have attended school in Nebraska to have this anti-American supporter of terrorist from the same state. I stopped giving money to the school because they ran a picture of this idiot on the school magazine.
There is NO comparison of the war on terror to Vietnam except for the fact that there are TRAITORS in the US Senate who are supporting the terrorist enemies of the American people just like they supported the Communist in North Vietnam and caused the death of millions of South Vietnamese and thousands of Americans.
The people of Nebraska should be ashamed to keep electing a totally anti-American dumb POS like this supporter of the terrorist.
Any even occasional observer of government leaders of the world in general, of the US Govt leadership as well, can quickly see the idea of "best and brightest" in govt, remains unrealized.
More like govt leadership positions are the home of wackadoodles, foreign and domestic.
