The Sterilization of America: A Cautionary History "It is better for all the world, if instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime, or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind…Three generations of imbeciles are enough." — Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., in Buck v. Bell, 1927 Eugenics, a word all but removed from America’s lexicon after World War II, is the "science" of improving the human race through controlled breeding. Much like the Trail of Tears, Tuskegee medical experiments, or the Japanese internment in this country, the word harkens us back to a shameful time most would just as soon forget.

It's interesting that they discuss the Eugenics Records Office but not one of its two leading funders, Planned Parenthood Treasurer Prescott Bush.

Marx, Wagner, and Mussolini were Darwinist. Stalin was a Marxist and Hitler was a Wagnerist.

I have some old encyclopedias from the 1930's. There is a chapter about eugenics. It is amazing that they thought this to be such a "humane" thing to do. Forced sterilization of undesirables was deemed as progress. BTW the undesirables were basically anyone not them, ala HItler's Germany. Old encyclopedias are a great way to get a snapshot into the period.

If I remember correctly, Vermont was the last state to remove its eugenic laws and that was in the 1970's.

Prescott Bush, Bill Gates' father, Warren Buffett. Anybody see a pattern here? I do. The old-money WASP elite has long had a fondness for eugenics, based on a sense of their own superiority.

A correction. Marx was NOT a Darwinist.

First he formed his ideas BEFORE Darwin.

Second, his word-view was not compatible on random mutations followed by free market like elimination of the weak. It was not based on racism either or irrational struggle for its own sake.

His theory of history was derived from Hegel, so he believed that historical process is guided by unifying reason and has final purpose.

That is why under Stalin, the late Marxists led by Lysenko attempted to defeat Darwin.

When American liberals in their fight against Protestant Fundamentalists try to bash them with dinosaurs, unwittingly they follow Hitler and not Marx.

More than once, this article condemns immigration quotas in the context of the evils of eugenics. Pardon my cynicism, but I suspect this is the reason this article was posted and written in the first place.

Immigration quotas were not created to impose an evil agenda, neither are they being contemplated and discussed now for an evil purpose.

Nothing to see here... move along.

You've just got to scratch your head, when the left goes off on eugenics. Even a cursory glance at abortion statistics, as to just whose offspring are being eliminated, would highlight the obvious, that eugenics is alive and well. But, self-styled "progressives" are oddly blind to this.

There is nothing Darwinian about Hitler's atrocities (or any type of forced sterilization program). Natural selection means just what it says: a natural process. Hitler's atrocities were entirely unnatural.

Oh please. The mere desire of people to continue existing isn't racism, a fact this author would probably support if the people objecting were, say, Amazonian Indians. Every time Time and Newsweek features a nut brown everyman as the future American, that's eugenics. Present day immigration programs are eugenics, consciously designed to breed out an undesirable biological characteristic, whiteness, a eugenics program apparently supported by these authors. It is also an enemy of freedom, since multiethnic empires have always been less free here in the real world that is, as opposed to the world of ivory tower theories.
