FRESNO, California (AP) -- The death toll from California's record-breaking heat wave rose to 123 Friday as weather forecasters announced that, for the first day in nearly two weeks, the temperature would stay below 100 degrees across most of the state.
The vast majority of the deaths have been elderly people whose bodies don't cope as well in the heat, county coroners said.
But there have also been younger people. A 38-year-old gardener collapsed on the job and died last week. On Wednesday, two brothers, ages 57 and 68, were found dead in a Bakersfield home without air conditioning.
The entire state has been sizzling in triple-digit temperatures since July 16. Only Friday were the heat advisories finally lifted and meteorologist said the heat wave appear to be nearing its end.
"By Monday, Tuesday we'll be even cooler than normal," said Mike Delman, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service. In the extended forecast, "It might warm up a bit, but nothing like what we had."

Triple digit temperature is not a stranger to Bakersfield or the valley. I wonder what the two brothers in Bakersfield did differently this year than previous years when the temp was above 100 degrees.

...yeah and Oakland I don't believe got into the 100s. Stays cooler in SF and the immediate east bay....grew up in Oakland Hills....so I know....you go over the hill in Contra Costa....where I am in Antioch....yikes...it was 114 last Saturday.....power went out for 12 hours on sat and 4 hours on Sunday....when it was a much cooler 108

right!!!!!......plus hey, you So Cal guys not got it hard but get some of that tropical humidity too where at least it is dry up here...I lived in San Diego for 5 years and 5 years in Upland and Long Beach.....seems like you get more and more humidity each year.....I know most homes in San Diego have no AC....or at least my friends down there don't west of La Mesa
On Sat, It was 98 at Oakland Airport and 94 in Oakland according to NWS
I have been hearing and reading only on the national news about these heat related deaths in California. Here in San Diego, there's been nothing on our local news about this event. To me this brings up issues of what is considered newsworthy, and by whom, and who makes decisions about what is on the news.
Rules and regs for cities require paving = progress
The more pavement = more heat
...even little 'ol Flagstaff, once a cool place to be in the AZ summer time is mostly paved, must have air conditioning now....and so it goes.
68 is now considered "younger". That makes me feel better.

Officials were "shocked" that "our customers" USE electricity?? So now their deaths are on our heads? Maybe if they'd acknowledge how many actual illegals are here...and instead of telling people not to use their appliances,-- not even to use water in the daytime because "it could use electricity to get it to you," I actually heard that this week,-- why not plan to meet actual usage??
Bakersfield is one of the hottest desert places in the nation. Much of S. Cal is citified desert, and we should expect heat. This is not some glamourous place to live.
This going to be milked for global warming 'proof.' We'll probably have the same amount die from the cold in winter.
