McBride Closes on Harris for GOP Senate Nomination Date: 24-07-2006
Will McBride, vying for the Republican nomination to oppose Senator Bill Nelson in November, ran a dead heat against Representative Katherine Harris, Sunday, in a key straw poll. Republican activists in Seminole County gave Harris a razor-thin two vote margin at their biannual Elephant Stampede in Altamonte Springs.
"I am deeply grateful to the many GOP supporters who attended the Seminole Elephant Stampede and cast their votes for me", McBride commented. "It is deeply gratifying after just two months to have gained the support of so many knowledgeable Republicans, and we will continue to visit party meetings throughout the state to get our message out.
"The people who support our candidacy believe with me that Bill Nelson can be defeated", McBride continued. "I am running to stop out of control spending and the wasteful practice of earmarked legislation for special interest groups and it is clear from this vote that Republican activists in Altamonte Springs, Lake Mary and Winter Springs - and throughout Seminole County -- have got the message.
"We are disgusted that, according to the Congressional Research Service, $53 billion was wasted in more than 14 thousand private pork projects in 2004. We are worried that the national debt is growing by nearly $2 billion dollars a day and that we pay interest of more than $350 billion a year on that debt.
Voting results at the Seminole County Elephant Stampede, hosted by three women's Republican clubs in the county, were as follows: Katherine Harris 78, Will McBride 76, Leroy Collins Jr 12 and Peter Monroe 1.
"My chief opponent for the Republican nomination has been in the race for nearly a year", McBride observed. "She has universal name recognition and in just the last three months spent more than $2 million on her campaign. "That we have run virtually even with her in this important straw poll means two things about informed voters: they want an alternative to Katherine Harris and that alternative is Will McBride."
I'm voting for McBride. Harris can't win.
How is Harris doing after her surgery?
Don't know.
Passing it on.. Personally, I am leaning towards Will McBride at this point, but I can still be persuaded.. I welcome FReepers attempt to talk me out of supporting Will McBride..
I read she is doing fine after her surgery, although I don't have a source for the statement.
Hopefully McBride is gaining and will eventually surpass Harris. I'll take someone with little name recognition over a person who is widely known but (almost) universally disliked.
I am left wondering how the Republican Party of Florida allowed it to come to this.....and I'm a member of it.
Misleading headline - this was a ***straw poll*** - not a scientific poll. The title may in fact be true, but the story doesn't really support it.
There is also speculation that Harris will win the primary and drop out of the race afterwards. Here's that article:

Whether it's true, I can't say.
Fair Enough....
While I will always appreciate the way she handled herself and the events of the 2000 election- I'm not inclined to support her..too much baggage I think.
It is amazing the way we Florida Republicans keep tearing ourselves up - after the last go round with McCollum and Martinez, I'd hoped we'd be less at each other's throats..but it seems not the case.
I don't honestly think she can beat Nelson- that is my main goal.
A straw poll...
I'm inclined to join you, but I'm not a Florida resident. Do you have a spare Diebold so I can get started? (I burned mine out voting in Ohio in '04.)
P.S. Don't let anyone from you-know-where see this post. We've gotta keep the secret.
If there are any leftist lunatics from the DUngheap lurking, they will believe that you are telling the truth. That's how paranoid and delusional these liberal kooks are.
Just my 2cents worth,
David
McBride...lawyer.
Katherine Harris...not a lawyer.
That's enough for me.
When is the primary?
