Last Call For Rolling Rock Beer No Longer Brewed In Latrobe

POSTED: 2:21 pm EDT July 26, 2006 UPDATED: 2:49 pm EDT July 26, 2006

LATROBE, Pa. -- Wednesday marked the last day Rolling Rock will be brewed and bottled at Latrobe Brewing Company.

The official last day for workers will be Monday.

A deal was put in place to allow Rolling Rock workers to keep their jobs.

The union approved an agreement with City Brewing on Sunday.

The Wisconsin-based company will buy the Latrobe Brewery from In-Bev USA.

The Rolling Rock beer brand was sold to Anheuser-Busch.

Production of the beer will move to Newark, N.J.

"AB'll water it down so much the unique taste will be like chlorinated tap water, just like all their other crappy beers. I'm glad I found Guinness."

I don't think they will, why mess with a good thing?

RR is okay but I prefer Sam Adams, Harpoon IPA, Guinness Extra Stout Draft and Dead Fish head Pale Ale.

A-B wil NOT change RR's formula. They never do when they buy another label. That's another beer urban legend. They're in the business of making money, not pissing off potential customers.

They already own a piece of Redhook, Widmer Bros, and now Goose Island in Chicago. It gives them a presence in a section of the beer market that actually does show some potential growth.

About the only way that breweries can grow nowadays is through takeovers. If anything, you might see RR in more places than ever since A-B's distribution network is so good.

This warrants a minute of silence and a month of mourning.

There is micro brewery in Chicago called Goose Island. Excellent beer. Primo. Store tells me that I may not be able to get it anymore, it was bought by Anheuser-Busch. Crap. I sure hope that is not the case.

I also enjoy Sam Adams, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Young's Oatmeal Stout, and my friend Neal's home brew he just calls "the mean stuff".

It's actually a pretty nice landmark around these parts and a welcome sight when I land at Newark Liberty Airport. And I'm a Sam Adams guy, myself...

We should label this thread "TWIB Notes" ... "This Week In Beer." :-)

Isn't that what happened to the "Star Beer" brewery in the movie, "Take This Job and Shove It"?

The Bud brewery in Newark is next to the big int'l airport. The flapping eagle electric sign is a major local landmark.

But I canNOT imagine drinking its production, regardless of the label they slap on it.

I lived in Honeoye Falls, and Lima, (NY for the ignorant) back in the '70's. This NC boy remembers a lot of things from the area.

I was never a big beer drinker, but it was good. I also loved the "Pop Stop" in Lima, where you could find some good sodas, cheap, and some mighty fine "white hots" from Tom something-or-others.

When I first visited the area, we went in December (ugh!). We ordered ice tea with our dinner. I have never seen people look so wierd at a common request, back home! They did brew some tea, though, and brought us some ice!

(The only hangovers I get, are from Bacardi rum! But, I also don't normally drink more than 2-3 drinks a day, including wine with dinner. I don't drink much rum.)
