KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s opposition Islamic party has accused a top judge of insulting Islam by ruling that a Muslim boy need not wear a turban — as the Prophet Muhammad did — to prove his faith. The case began when three Muslim boys sued the government because their state school expelled them for refusing to remove their turbans. The boys lost their case, and appealed — but a Federal Court dismissed the appeal.
Judge Abdul Hamid Mohamed said in the ruling last week that it isn’t necessary for Muslims to do exactly as the Prophet Muhammad did.
‘‘Islam is not about turbans and beards. The pagan Arabs wore turbans and kept beards. It was quite natural for the Prophet, born into the community, to do the same,’’ the judge said.
Even in Malaysia, very few religious clerics and hardly any Shariah Court judges wear a turban, he said, adding that the Prophet also rode a camel but ‘‘does that make riding a camel a more pious deed than traveling in an airplane?’’ The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, or PAS, said the judge should have been more restrained in his comments since he is not an expert on Islam.
‘‘Parts of what he said insults and belittles Islamic teachings,’’ PAS youth chief Salahuddin Ayub said. ‘‘We want the Federal Court judgment to be reviewed. According to our religious teaching, wearing a turban is part of the Islamic way of life.’’
Malaysia’s civil and criminal codes are based on secular laws, but its Muslim majority also must adhere to a separate set of Islamic laws covering issues such as inheritance, births and deaths, marriage and divorce.

As for the country as a whole, they have been heading down the path to Arabization ever since independence and the koranimal courts answer to no one. I wouldn't be surprised to see them all replace their traditional songkok (the headgear that is used by more pious muslim males there) with turbans in the not too distant future. The shiite minority there already wear them.

The Judge is a dead man.He has just blasphemed the (so called) prophet.

Still, I'm a bit surprised that even turbans must be worshipped and revered as holy objects in Malaysia.

So the judge is in trouble because he insulted an article of clothing. My response to the insulted islamics is the same as to the hypersensitive PC liberals here: Get a life.
This is the kind of thing that drives muslims to riot. They're even bigger whiners than the liberals. Now that's a hell of a feat!

The islamics are straight-up schizo. They'll talk about how proud and upstanding they are, then in the next breath they're moaning about how they're endlessly humiliated and victimized.
The kids concerned were indoctrinated at islamic classes, and are "hafez-e-Quran: ie, they can recite the entire Quran from memory.
The malaysian state schools are extremely anal about their uniform dress codes... songkoks can pass, but I suspect these are PAS inspired agitators trying to make a point about UMNO (the ruling party, and their secular courts and judicial system inherited from the Brits) not being "islamic enough."
There is constant tension between the two opposing parties, and the area is in the zone where reversion to "true islam" is playing out. Its close to the states of Kelentan and Trengannu, where all out sharia was imposed on the population by PAS, to the dismay of bumiputras (muslim malay) and non-Muslim Chinese and Indians alike.
What will it be next? A reversion to fullscale cannibalism ~ such as was practiced by their ancestors until Admiral He came in with a gazillion Chinese to teach them some manners?
The people with power (ie Muslim Bumiputras), knowing little better, side with the latter... and those who would stop them (malaysia sizable ethnic Chinese community) have been stripped of power as second class dhimmi citizens, and are threatened with another "May 13" style incident (ie, massacre by muslims) everytime they dare flex their political muscles in elections...
I wipe my a$$ with the Koran. How's that for insulting?
