When Jason Lewis left his top-rated local talk radio show for Charlotte, N.C., in 2003, many Minnesotans' radios were draped in black. Now "Minnesota's Mister Right," as he bills himself, is back. He'll hit the airwaves on KTLK (100.3 FM) on Aug. 7.
Lewis is eager to jump back into the fray with his erudite brand of conservatism. He's a scourge of Big Government, a free-market booster and a cultural traditionalist.
What lured Lewis back from balmy Charlotte? "People think Minnesota is more liberal than it is, and North Carolina is more conservative than it is," he says. Lewis says he was surprised by the "apathy" in the Tarheel State, as well as the state's escalating tax burden. He deplores, in particular, what he calls the devastating effects of a flood of illegal immigrants on health care and education.
"I've seen what can happen when you lose control of your community," he says. "Minnesota's challenge is to keep what it's got."
Lewis and his wife, a St. Paul native, want to raise their two children, ages 10 and 4, in Minnesota. When he isn't fielding calls from listeners, Lewis says, he's daydreaming about sitting at Cross Lake -- where he spent summers as a child -- sipping coffee and listening to the loons.
Lewis says he was a skeptic about government power from his earliest days. As a boy, he put in long hours at his family's automotive parts business in Waterloo, Iowa. "I learned firsthand about scrimping and saving in a small business to make three cents on the dollar," he says. "I saw that a small rise in taxes or regulation can have a profound effect on your ability to survive."
As a teen, Lewis began devouring books by conservative theorists and free-market thinkers. In college, he tangled

I can't wait. We really need him back.
I remember listening to Jason way back when... My car radio came from the dealer pre-tuned to AM 1500.
The good news: he'll be back before the general election and the primaries. Too many misinformed Minnesotans (those who think the Star Tribune is a credible news source) need their blinders removed.
Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!
Your gain is NC's loss.
We REALLY need 10 Jason's here!!!!
Assuming his political sensibilities are still rightly ordered, how 'bout a shameless plug?
Shameless does not equal guiltless.
I'm hoping there are -- or will someday be -- radio broadcasting schools for conservative commentators-to-be. Non-PC, commendable colleges like Hillsdale and Grove City exist; why not a few conservative broadcast schools?
But you'd be helping us avoid liberal car dealers!
Exactly. I really think we have been starving for a local conservative on the radio again that is not into "talking" (like the pathetic duo he is replacing) about different positions, but about taking and defending positions and calling idiots, idiots!!
Jason will be sorely missed.
:(
I listen to Joe via the net from time to time. I'll have to find the new FM station...
He writes exceptionally well, too. His columns in the Star Trib generally engender frothing fulminations from liberal letter writers suffering from sorely gored oxen.
No more Brian Lampert! LIFE...IS...GOOD!
Is he taking Brian and Sarah's spot after Hannity? I haven't seen a new schedule yet, but I'm hoping he'll on the air in the most efficacious time slot.
That's what I heard.
Not to knock them, but I've never found any of them to be as listenable to as Jason, plus the following that Jason had.
