UN Secretary General Kofi Annan today said he was "shocked" at Israel's "apparently deliberate targeting" of a UN post in Lebanon, in which up to four UN observers were killed.
Mr Annan described the strike as a "co-ordinated artillery and aerial attack on a long established and clearly marked UN post."
He said it took place "despite personal assurances given to me by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that UN positions would be spared Israeli fire."
"Furthermore, General Alain Pelligrini, the UN Force Commander in south Lebanon, had been in repeated contact with Israeli officers throughout the day on Tuesday, stressing the need to protect that particular UN position from attack.
"I call on the Government of Israel to conduct a full investigation into this very disturbing incident and demand that any further attack on UN positions and personnel must stop.
"The names and nationalities of those killed are being withheld pending notification of their families. I extend sincere condolences to the families of our fallen peacekeepers."
Something about this soooo smells!
hope it was deliberate...up yours kofi
Yeah, I THOUGHT he sounded particularly "distressed" in his comments yesterday. He's pissed at someone or something.
So IOW, he's running for cover?
Uh huh. Can't wait for the truth to get buried by the DB/LSM.
World to Kofi,
We don't care.
What on earth were his qualifications other than he is as inept as the governing body he heads. Oh, I guess I answered my own question.
Yes. According to the BBC web site today, the observers were from China, Austria, Canada and Finland. These people were somebody's kid, boyfriend, someone's Dad or cousin out there. Any one of them could have been an American - we've got people "observing" for the UN as well. I agree, Annan's well-documented policy of allowing UN observers to be used as human shields in conflicts around the globe should be the sole focus of our outrage. He is the one with the blood of those dead observers on his hands. The man isn't just a buffoon, he's a murderous one.
I think they would hit the UN people if they were artillery spotting for the hezbos. For world consumption they would have to pretend they didn't mean to.
This is a little bit like the USS Liberty. Politically they couldn't blast us, but if we were gathering intel that they had reason to believe was being used against them, they had no choice. There is a lot about that story that never came out, imo.
That video is absolutely deplorable! As is the UN.
As useless as it is, we need to stay, keep pulling for what's right, and veto as often as necessary.
Give me a break, Annan. We all know you are so-o-o-o anti-semitic. You have just been looking for an excuse to let most of the world rain down their bullets on Israel...
"I sure hope it was deliberate... that would indicate the IDF had good information that the UN observers were cooperating with Hezbollah leaders and providing shelter... no way they deliberately target it without that knowledge... would be another nail in the UN coffin."
Could of been deliberate to keep UN "peacekeepers" out so they can finish destroying Hezbollah's military capacity. The UN would like find a way to ease pressure off Hezbollahs activities and they would easily re-arm. I want to feel bad about those four people losing their lives but I first want to know what these UN reps were doing and why they were there. Sorry, but the UN has lost all of it's reputation permanently in my eyes.
Anyone else note that an entire thread on the UN observer deaths was pulled from FR sometime during the past 12 hours?

No, I hadn't noticed. If so, it might just be that the Mods thought of it as a duplicate?
This has shown the world what FReepers have known for years!!!
How does Kofi call them peacekeepers with a straight face?
Yes. And I just heard him backtracking and attempting to retrieve his anti-Semitic attitude...
"Coffee is a dirtball who does nothing to help his own people in Darfur."
His own people! How do you define this kinship?
Given that Kofi Annan is Ghanan of Akan heritage and Darfur is in the Sudan, I presume you must take a fairly broad definition of grouping ethnic types:
Perhaps you used the following reasoning:
Approximate skin color (check), Same continent (Check) = Same people.
