UN Secretary General Kofi Annan today said he was "shocked" at Israel's "apparently deliberate targeting" of a UN post in Lebanon, in which up to four UN observers were killed.
Mr Annan described the strike as a "co-ordinated artillery and aerial attack on a long established and clearly marked UN post."
He said it took place "despite personal assurances given to me by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that UN positions would be spared Israeli fire."
"Furthermore, General Alain Pelligrini, the UN Force Commander in south Lebanon, had been in repeated contact with Israeli officers throughout the day on Tuesday, stressing the need to protect that particular UN position from attack.
"I call on the Government of Israel to conduct a full investigation into this very disturbing incident and demand that any further attack on UN positions and personnel must stop.
"The names and nationalities of those killed are being withheld pending notification of their families. I extend sincere condolences to the families of our fallen peacekeepers."

Or more likely Hezbollah located missiles and personnel close to the UN observers.
It is Hezbollah that is responsible for those deaths, not Israel.

Following an initial inquiry, it appears that during the operation a UN post was unintentionally hit. The IDF expresses deep regret over the incident and stresses that it would never intentionally target any UN facility or personnel. The IDF is launching a full investigation in close coordination with the UN. **************
I believe it. Targeting a UN post and killing two soldiers would do nothing to advance Israel's cause. It would but gain her world censure and jeopardize her relationship with the U.S.

Anyone else note that an entire thread on the UN observer deaths was pulled from FR sometime during the past 12 hours?

I hope it was deliberate: the "peacekeepers" on the side of the terrorists.

My point was not that the allegations are proven, it was that there was at least as much proof that this is true as what Kofi Annon was using to claim the Israelis did this bombing on purpose.
In fact neither position has any evidence out there, so Kofi Annon Should shut his yap.
Everyone on this sight was merely speculating about reasons why the Israelis may have done it on purpose, if they did.
Kofi in all likelihood had no direct line of communications with the UN troops in the field, so I find it exceedingly difficult to believe that he had enough information to make such a vicious public statement against the Israelis.

I have not read this long thread yet so this might have been mentioned but this morning on one of the news networks it was stated that the UN contacted Israel numerous times to complain that the airstrikes were "coming too close" to their observers.
I suppose it never occurred to them to evacuate a war zone, and why on earth should Israel wait for them to do so?
