UN Secretary General Kofi Annan today said he was "shocked" at Israel's "apparently deliberate targeting" of a UN post in Lebanon, in which up to four UN observers were killed.
Mr Annan described the strike as a "co-ordinated artillery and aerial attack on a long established and clearly marked UN post."
He said it took place "despite personal assurances given to me by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that UN positions would be spared Israeli fire."
"Furthermore, General Alain Pelligrini, the UN Force Commander in south Lebanon, had been in repeated contact with Israeli officers throughout the day on Tuesday, stressing the need to protect that particular UN position from attack.
"I call on the Government of Israel to conduct a full investigation into this very disturbing incident and demand that any further attack on UN positions and personnel must stop.
"The names and nationalities of those killed are being withheld pending notification of their families. I extend sincere condolences to the families of our fallen peacekeepers."
A war with the UN would probably be a pretty short one.
The UN has been there all along which is why Hezbulla has found it impossible to make any raids into Israel or obtain huge quantities of bombardment rockets and other weapons. Way to go! UN! UN is equally successful in Kashmir.
Sure... We'll launch an investigation right away. We'll get back to you in... ehhh... 5 Years.
How does he know it was deliberate? Does he have proof?
I hope so. It would be a new holiday!

Something smells funny about this, where was it, on the
roof of a Hezb'ullah armory?
Maybe Kofi will go there himself to investigate the incident.
I sure hope it was deliberate... that would indicate the IDF had good information that the UN observers were cooperating with Hezbollah leaders and providing shelter... no way they deliberately target it without that knowledge... would be another nail in the UN coffin.
You must have read my mind.
You got that right!!!
Ha ha! Very true.
Proof? He doesn't need any stinking proof! He's in the UN!
the U.N. is a vocal enemy of Israel, as noticed by the large volume of resolutions condemning Israeli actions.
Why didn't coffee pull out his peacekeepers? His statement about "deliberate" is grotesque, but oh so typical anti-Isreal Kofi. I wouldn't be surprised at all, if it is found that one of the biggies Isreal got today was in this very attack. Were the hezzies taking refuse in the UN camp? Was this done with Kofi's knowledge? Perhaps that will be part of the investigation.
Kofi ,
you are a reprehensible replica of a human being. I have seen more intelligent creatures , laying on there backs, at the bottom of ponds.
