KISSIMMEE -- If she hadn't had surgery last week, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Katherine Harris said, she would have arrived at a GOP picnic on horseback Saturday.

Instead, she made her entrance by helicopter, flown by a friend from the nearby city airport to the Kissimmee Sports Arena.

"If I could have been Wendy on Peter Pan, I couldn't have had more fun," Harris said. "I am feeling great."

The Republican congresswoman from Longboat Key underwent surgery to remove an ovarian mass on Monday. A day later, she was back on the floor of Congress, voting to change the Constitution to ban gay marriage.

She said she did not know results of tests to determine whether the mass was cancerous, but that she had no plans to slow her campaign to unseat incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson.

Her stopover at the Osceola Elephant Stampede BBQ was part of nine hours of events all across the state Saturday.

The crowd of local Republican candidates and party loyalists greeted her with cheers and hugs. One man even had Harris sign his cowboy hat, which already bears the autograph of Merle Haggard.

"You are absolutely my hero," Margaret Knight told Harris as she wandered the crowd.

Knight, who owns a paralegal firm in Kissimmee, later explained that she had followed Harris for years.

"Anytime I see a woman in politics stand up like she did, it catches my eye," she said.

Harris greets fans at 'Elephant Stampede'

GOP loyalists rally at a Kissimmee picnic as the Senate hopeful predicts her victory.

Looking beyond the September primary election, in which she faces three Republican challengers, Harris predicted she would capture 52 percent of the vote against Nelson in the general election because she can get Republicans to the polls.

"To win, I need to stir up the base," Harris said. "And I stir up the base."

52% ....Never going to happen . Did she answer the question of taking money back out of her campaign ? She will have to answer that in the general . Get ready , we're going to be stuck with Nelson for 6 more years .

She might actually hamper other Republicans , like Crist who should easily win . Harris will turn out the Lefties like no one else, but I guess that's ok too ?

Harris energizes the GOP base.....they GOTV for Martinez and will certainly do that for Katherine!

And Gallagher will also energize the conservatives in FL especially since it is now obvious that he is the true conservative & not Crist who supports federally funded embryonic stem cell research.

You're not being realistic . Harris will energize the Libs like no other, which will offset our GOTV. I'll support any of them after the primaries . Will you ?

Shhhhh. Its better to lose with Harris than win with a less controversal candidate. At least thats what I hear from some people here.

Her visuals are great!
But who's the wizard what cum up with 'Elephant Stampede' ??!?!
This is giving me a glimmer why we have so much grief with elections in FL.

I will not be the first one to characterize "it".

'Elephant Stampede' ..... indeed.

Ovarian surgery on Monday, and back in the House the next day? That's tough.

Prayers for her recovery, and that the mass wasn't cancerous.

Avoiding my question . If your choices lose , are you going home mad or are you going to put it aside and try to win ? I'm willing to support anyone on our side who wins , are you ?

Do you ever get as tired of repeating yourself post after post as we get tired of reading your repetitious posts?

Yeah and the bad part is that Nelson can divert funds to other Libs and Harris will have a massive negative turnout which will hurt other Republicans . I can't understand some of these people .

Avoiding your question?

You still have not answered my very first question...... I never asked you about the gun issue.

You still have not addressed Crist's own words regarding embryonic stem cell research......

How can you call him conservative when he said would have voted for it had he been a senator and the President just vetoed it?

And JEB is also against it.....so how can you call Crist a conservative in your tagline?

Don't read them then . It takes two to debate . Direct your nasty attitude somewhere else, how about the Dims maybe . It's obvious that you don't believe in or understand what primaries are, but you should do some research on how they work , it's amazing !

Yes....Harris works hard & she takes her responsibilities as Representaive very serious.....she wanted to be in the House to support the Marriage Amendment.

Thanks for your prayers for her recovery.

Your tagline is inaccurate....

Crist's support of federally funded embryonic stem cell research disqualifies him to be called a conservative!
