US Representative John Murtha of Pennsylvania, the senior Democrat on the House Defense Appropriations Committee and an Iraq war critic, was the guest at last Friday's Monitor breakfast.
"We have become occupiers. We cannot win this militarily. But I hesitated to say anything. I waited probably too long. The way we operate militarily is a problem.... We go into a place, we have to blow it up to protect American lives. I agree with that. That's the way we operate to protect Americans.
On what would change if the Democrats retook control of the House:
"Accountability is going to be the key. Corruption, talk about corruption ... there [are] billions of dollars that disappeared and we don't know where it is. We have all kinds of stories which haven't been followed up.... The biggest deficiency among all the other mistakes is no accountability in this administration ... I think checks and balances have gotten out of kilter."
On why he is running for House majority leader:
"I think I can help because I am more conservative.... There is an idea that [the Democrats'] leadership is very liberal and I think I bring some balance to that leadership."
On whether the press has been an active enough watchdog during the war in Iraq:
"I blame some of you guys, too. You guys knew this wasn't going well. You didn't say a damn word, either. You just sat back and were afraid to speak out. I don't know whether it was access or what. But you sat back and did nothing either.

Exactly, it is beyond imagination that he is making some of these statements unless he has completely forgotten the ABSCAM mess which I guess would be possible for a delusional person.
Do you think that talk like this may embolden the Iranians? All this talk about the army being worn out, stretched to thin makes no sense to me. My guess is that Rumsfeld is using up a bunch of old stuff he doesn't want going forward.
Hey John, it's in the Big Dig. Ask Kennedy about it over drinks. He knows all about it.
Murtha...
"I want to deal with you guys awhile before I make any transactions at all, period.... After we've done some business, well, then I might change my mind...." ..."I'm going to tell you this. If anybody can do it -- I'm not B.S.-ing you fellows -- I can get it done my way." he boasted. "There's no question about it."... But the reluctant Murtha wouldn't touch the $50,000. Here on secret videotape was this all-American hero, tall and dignified in a disheveled way, explaining why he wasn't quite ready to accept the cash. "All at once," he said, "some dumb [expletive deleted] would go start talking eight years from now about this whole thing and say [expletive deleted], this happened. Then in order to get immunity so he doesn't go to jail, he starts talking and fingering people. So the [S.O.B.] falls apart."... "You give us the banks where you want the money deposited," offered one of the bagmen. "All right," agreed Murtha. "How much money we talking about?"
"Well, you tell me." "Well, let me find out what is a reasonable figure that will get their attention," said Murtha, "because there are a couple of banks that have really done me some favors in the past, and I'd like to put some money in....["] The dialogue continued as follows: Amoroso: Let me ask you now that we're together. I was under the impression, OK, and I told Howard [middleman Howard Criden] what we were willing to pay, and [This is where the available videotape begins]I went out, I got the $50,000. OK? So what you're telling me, OK, you're telling me that that's not what you know.... Murtha: I'm not interested. Amoroso: OK. Murtha: At this point, [This is where the available videotape ends] you know, we do business together for a while. Maybe I'll be interested and maybe I won't.... Right now, I'm not interested in those other things. Now, I won't say that some day, you know, I, if you made an offer, it may be I would change my mind some day.

I went on Murtha's website but couldn't find his travel itinery. Wonder if anyone knows how to find it? We ought to Freep the creep wherever he slithers. (And I'm especially hoping he comes to New York City.)
That's like bragging about being the Smartest one on a Bus full of Retards!
Pray for W and Our Freedom Fighters
Shalom Israel
He's up in NH, Not that far from NY.
More conservative than who?? Sheehan? Jeez, this guy is nuts!
Was this airhead around during the Klintoon years?
How about forming an independent bi-partisan commission to find the silverware and furniture that disappeared from the White House?
When you resolve THAT accountability problem, we might believe you ........ but then, anyone who has made such an ass of himself everytime he speaks is hard to consider EVER credible....
Do you think he's someone's sock puppet? Maybe they're secretly egging him on so he makes Pelosi and the others look sane by comparison. He's actually making McKinney look rational. Then again it could be senile dementia.
That's been discussed for a couple months on different threads. I suppose it's possible but some of the statements he's been making are so far out now that I kind of doubt it.
This is brilliant. What makes me think the MSM will never follow up on this one?!
Maybe I give the party more credit for how much they control their membership. Maybe they're splintering that badly that they can't control the MoveOntoSocialism.com element any longer. Good news for us! Keep flappin' your trap, Jack!
This article devoted the second and third paragraphs to his military record (including a Kerryesque tribute to his Vietnam service), before even getting to the meat.
Besides revealing themselves as idiotic and transparently partisan as Murtha's rantings, the MSM journalists who constantly trot out his military service just piss me off,
A) Because, by association, they're promoting this dork as being representative of Marines' Iraq War stances.
B) It dishonors the Corps.
It's like the old line, "I'd call you a BLEEP, but that would be an insult to BLEEPS everywhere".
p.s.
I didn't even read any of Murtha's Creutzfeldt-Jakob induced babblings, I only got as far as the obligatory military service record (like I forgot!).
Good point. Nobody's publicly called him on it, have they, maybe he thinks American has forgotten?
Murtha is certifiable...and Diana needs to challenge him to a debate...and also ask for a psychiatric diagnosis...LOL
I am certainly glad you added that qualifier "sometimes," as I and other old codgers here, might take umbrage to that comment. lol
You might have saved yourself a little grief if you would have simply added "liberal" or "democrat" as we all know that the majority (regardless of age) are mad as hatters.
When I read his remarks about his being "Conservative," I literally laughed so hard that I fell off my chair.
What a joke, he is.
