Police confiscate 'cop killer' gun in Far rockaway

By:Stephen Stirling 07/21/2006

Police in Far Rockaway arrested and charged three youths with criminal possession of a weapon Wednesday after a search of their home yielded a powerful type of handgun that has been responsible for more than two-thirds of police officer deaths since 1994, according to the Queens district attorney.

Police executed a court-authorized raid of the home of William Davis, 21, brother Clarence Davis, 18, and friend Gquan Lloyd, 18, Wednesday morning and found a notoriously powerful Fabrique Nationale 5.7 handgun along with another less-powerful handgun and a bag of cocaine, according to DA Richard Brown. The gun, called a "cop killer" by many for its ability to pierce 48 layers of bullet-proof Kevlar, is the first of its type to be recovered by authorities in New York City.

"The FN 5.7 is a lethal handgun imported from Belgium and capable of easily penetrating most police vets and plates," Brown said. "While this is the first time that such a deadly weapon has been recovered in New York City, its presence is troubling and makes the job of street cops that much more dangerous." Since 1994, 425 of the 616 police officers killed in the line of duty have been killed with a FN 5.7, the DA said.

The three Far Rockaway residents, all of the Hammel Houses on 81-10 Rockaway Beach Blvd., were arraigned Thursday on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and a controlled substance at Queens Criminal Court in Kew Gardens. If convicted, each could spend up to 15 years in prison.

I pride myself on keeping up with firearms. I have never even heard of this.
It must be costly..it keeping and feeding it. I doubt that your average gangbanger even know it is out there.

I wonder if it ever occurs to these guys how profoundly stupid some of the stuff they write is.

Apparently it doesn't, or they wouldn't write it.

The ammo is quite pricey and at times very difficult to obtain . The ammo that is being offered now is geared more towards civilians, with the good stuff being available only to mil/LE agecies. The pistol reatils for over a $1000 and I very seriously doubt ganbangers even know what it is . The story is pure BS and it reminds me of the Glock hysteria of the late 80's .

Yes, I had seen that table as well, but decided to keep the letter simple.

One of the wonderful things about the internet is how easy it is to do the research to prove bogus claims are, in fact, bogus.

I've found that if you read a media story about a subject you have knowledge of, you will find it full of errors. This leads me to believe that a similar number of errors exist in stories about which I do not have personal knowledge.

Correct.

The "article" is just more of the desperate anti-RKBA seditionist effort to force their socialist agenda on us, lying is their only means of communication.

b"Since 1994, 425 of the 616 police officers killed in the line of duty have been killed with a FN 5.7, the DA said." Where did you see that? I read the source article and did not see it.

Cut and pasted from the article above.

…its ability to pierce 48 layers of bullet-proof Kevlar

Guess it isn’t “bullet proof” then. Oh yea – it is bullet resistant, only the media hacks call it billet proof.

According to FNH USA, FN Herstal tested the SS192 ammunition. SS192 ammunition did not penetrate the Level IIIA vests that were tested. FNH USA states that SS196, Hornady V-Max 40 gr. bullets fired from a 4-3/4 inch barrel did not penetrate the Level II vests that were used in testing.

My Letter...

Dear Mr. Stirling,

After reading your recent article I just had to comment on the extremely poor job of fact checking you did before you published such completely false and misleading information about the FN 5.7. In your article you state as fact:

"The gun, called a "cop killer" by many for its ability to pierce 48 layers of bullet-proof Kevlar, is the first of its type to be recovered by authorities in New York City.
"The FN 5.7 is a lethal handgun imported from Belgium and capable of easily penetrating most police vets and plates," Brown said. "While this is the first time that such a deadly weapon has been recovered in New York City, its presence is troubling and makes the job of street cops that much more dangerous."
Since 1994, 425 of the 616 police officers killed in the line of duty have been killed with a FN 5.7, the DA said."

First thing that needs to be pointed out is that the FN 5.7 has only been available in the US civilian market since early 2004.

Next, according to FBI Statistics, http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/killed/leoka03.pdf, these are the facts as compiled by the US Government on the Law Enforcement Officer murders during the period of 1994-2003:

Table 29
Officers Killed...............616

Killed with Firearms.....568

Killed with Handguns...425

Table 30

Table 30 lists the caliber of weapons used in the murder of Law enforcement officers during the period. Notice that there is not even one instance of 5.7MM listed during that period.

Table 34

Table 34 tells us that only 19 Officers were killed by bullets penetrating their vests during that period.

Table 35

Table 35 then tells us that none of those bullets, that penetrated those 19 vests and killed their wearer, came from handguns. They in fact came from rifles.

Now Mr. Stirling, I certainly hope that this obvious factual oversight is not a result of your journalistic integrity being displaced by any personal bias on this issue. I think we can all agree that any murder of a police officer, or any person for that matter, is a horrible event. I also think we can all agree that your readers deserve to have information that is accurate and free of distortion. I certainly hope that you will use more dilligence, than you obviously did on this story, to insure that that future stories contain information that is a little more objective and correct.

Thanks for your time,

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Correct on all counts - the handgun is expensive, the ammo is expensive, and both are scarce enough for that fact alone to invalidate this article. FWIW, the cartridge is shared by the FN P-90 submachinegun and PS-90 semi-auto carbine.

"This 20-round pistol fires a 5.7mm bullet that will defeat most body armor in military service around the world today."

Has anyone bothered to make the conversion of 5.7mm to inches?

FWIW, Hammels is not in Far Rockaway. They never seem to get right the "outer boroughs."
