Police confiscate 'cop killer' gun in Far rockaway
By:Stephen Stirling 07/21/2006
Police in Far Rockaway arrested and charged three youths with criminal possession of a weapon Wednesday after a search of their home yielded a powerful type of handgun that has been responsible for more than two-thirds of police officer deaths since 1994, according to the Queens district attorney.
Police executed a court-authorized raid of the home of William Davis, 21, brother Clarence Davis, 18, and friend Gquan Lloyd, 18, Wednesday morning and found a notoriously powerful Fabrique Nationale 5.7 handgun along with another less-powerful handgun and a bag of cocaine, according to DA Richard Brown. The gun, called a "cop killer" by many for its ability to pierce 48 layers of bullet-proof Kevlar, is the first of its type to be recovered by authorities in New York City.
"The FN 5.7 is a lethal handgun imported from Belgium and capable of easily penetrating most police vets and plates," Brown said. "While this is the first time that such a deadly weapon has been recovered in New York City, its presence is troubling and makes the job of street cops that much more dangerous." Since 1994, 425 of the 616 police officers killed in the line of duty have been killed with a FN 5.7, the DA said.
The three Far Rockaway residents, all of the Hammel Houses on 81-10 Rockaway Beach Blvd., were arraigned Thursday on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and a controlled substance at Queens Criminal Court in Kew Gardens. If convicted, each could spend up to 15 years in prison.

FN's Five-seveN® Pistol The First of a New Generation In 1935, the FN-made Browning Hi Power was revolutionary. The market quickly adopted this high-capacity 9mm pistol accordingly, and it has since been fielded by over 100 countries. FN's newest contribution the handgun's evolution is named the Five-seveN®. This 20-round pistol fires a 5.7mm bullet that will defeat most body armor in military service around the world today. Essentially, the Five-seveN® represents a quantum leap forward in the handgun's suitablity for close engagements by delivering the type of performance that was previously confined to rifles or carbines. Elements of this performance include: High magazine capacity: The Five-seveN® comes standard with 20-round magazine. High stopping power: The Five-seveN® fires the 5.7x28mm SS190 Ball round which reliably penetrates Kevlar helmets and vests as well as CRISAT protection. High hit probability: The Five-seveN's® extremely low recoil impulse results in virtually no muzzle climb, thereby facilitating fast and controllable follow-up shots. Yet, the Five-seveN® is: Light and ergonomic: Weighing 30% less than most 9mm pistols, the smoothly-contoured Five-seveN® is comfortable to carry and quick to deploy. Fully safe: Due to its double-action firing mechanism, the Five-seveN® offers no inherent risk of accidental discharge during transportation. Furthermore, all of its safety devices are automatically reengaged following each firing cycle. The Five-seveN® fires the SS190 5.7x28mm ball round. This projectile will perforate any individual protection on today's battlefield including the PASGT kevlar helmet, 48 layers of kevlar body armor and the CRISAT target (titanium and kevlar). The SS190's conventional design allows it to be manufactured on existing production lines, and its lead-free composition eliminates range contamination. Five-seveN® Technical Specifications Caliber 5.7x28mm Operating principle Delayed blowback Trigger mechanism Double action only Magazine capacity 20 rounds Overall length 208mm (8.2 in) Barrel length 122.5mm (4.82 in) Weight, unloaded 618g (1.36 lb) Weight, loaded 744g (1.64 lb)

...pierce 48 layers of bullet-proof Kevlar...If it'll pierce bullet-proof Kevlar, then the Kevlar ain't bullet-proof, is it?

Wait wait wait wait wait...
Aren't all high caliber hand guns "cop killer"? Won't a .44 mag, casul, or the more recent .50 mag go right through a bullet proof vest? I have never heard of this gun before, what makes this so much more lethal then the ones I just mentioned?
To: gridlock
I don't think the FN in 5.7 Cal has been around since 1994. More like 2000-2004

There is no such thing as a bullet proof vest. The correct term for the NYC mayor is bullet resistant vest. LE does not walk around in body armor, which is bullet proof, to some extent.

"From 1994 to 2003 of the 616 officers killed in the line of duty 425 were killed with a handgun. Just last year (2003), nationwide there were 1,866 officers assaulted with firearms. There is a new tool on the market that all officers MUST BE AWARE of. The FN 5.7 The FN 5.7 is now available for purchase on the civilian market. I personally saw three of these being used at a private shooting range here in our city. You can pick one up at your local gun shop."
Sounds similar to this.

These are very very poweful handguns. I have 10 of them that I issue to my employees in my tree removal business. It's more costly to cut trees down with these, but they are much faster than chain saws, especially on 48 inch diameter oaks. My only problem is finding illegal aliens big enough to handle the massive recoil.

I've read on the user web board a lot of complaints about the plastic construction. And the ammo is a pain [$$, components are not easily available]. It needs to be re-chambered to a suitable wildcat, and made in decent steel.

Just about any rifle will pierce kevlar vests, but I do not believe that the 5.7 has killed THAT many police.

I live in NYC, we do not average 50 cops killed per year.
That is garbage, 50 cops killed a year for the last 12 years?
2/3 of them from the same kind of weapon?
If this number includes (or even if it doesn't include) cops killed on 9/11, the number is preposterious.
