Not once since Hizbollah kidnapped two Israeli soldiers, killed a young Israeli citizen have my liberal friends mentioned once in office conversation. Today I felt totally shut up when one of my co-workers made a comment about "my governor, Mitt Romney" and new benefit rules for MassHealth. I started to respond and was shut down by another co-worker who said O.k. let's not talk politics. I said "You democrates never want to talk politics." It's so frustrating. Day after day after I spend my evenings here on FR, my liberal co-workers talk about the next pair of curtains they are going to buy, wow, those Red Sox are so hot, etc.,...I'm surrounded by what I would say are people who really don't care about what goes on around them, unaware how what goes on in the world should affect them. My four fellow female co-workers never want to Discuss anything. Their feeling is people should be able to believe what they want, worship who they want and that's it. What is wrong with me. Why do I feel so isolated? Yes, I live in liberal Massachusetts and that should be the answer right there but I could use some encouraging comments. Thank you for considering my thread my wondersul fellow Freepers. There has to more to life than talking about curtains and paint doesn't there?
I had a whack-job leftist friend from college with whom I would email back and forth about politics. He stopped responding after I proved to him that Michael Moore was a liar and Fahrenheit 911 was a big pack of lies.
Thank you for your kind words. They mean so much to me.
:-) Good one!!!
You can do what you want, but my advice - fwiw - don't talk politics in the workplace. I was discharged from my last job because my politics differed from those of management. My new personal rule is - Don't talk politics in the workplace or to co-workers outside of the workplace. Never ever.
Well "they" already think I do too much coffee in the morning. I guess coffee is too stimulating to the mind, hun. Thanks!
Contact your local GOP party for your county. Go to a function or two. Then offer to host a "coffee" function at your house. Ideas like that will get you with like-minded people.
Oh yeah, and don't send emails of a political nature from work. They read them. And don't visit political websites at work. They log them.
Really? Wow! I got to tell ya, I think I'm the only exciting woman in my office. I'm full of personality and sometimes I think I'm over the top with it. My job as a property manager is dealing with people all day long. And I truly think I do a good darn job. I have tried to tame myself down a bit from week to week but why should I have to not talk about polictics when they can talk about all the exciting things going on in the A-list Hollyweirdos. That's riduculous. I always say to them, when I'm gone, you are gonna miss me for the entertainment value alone because that's how I feel I am to them. I can crack everyone of them up. I'm quick and witty and I keep them laughing.
Did you really say it like that? With the "crates" and everything?
Wow. You are in for a difficult life I fear.
Something I learned from Rush is to try to let people change their own mind.
Listen to the girls at work, when one reveals an area where she is open to a new idea mention it simply, plant a seed, then leave it alone, at some point she will come to the truth on her own.
If you don't already, try listening to Rush Limbaugh and pay attention to how subtle, and patient he is, medicine is easier taken one small dose at time.
Thank you for the advice. I will do just that.
I sure did and there was silence of course until I could switch gears and talk about the upcoming weather. How boring!
Since the day Bush was elected and I vociferously defended him in front of any of my friends who took potshots at him (I even proclaimed that he would go down as one of America's greatest Presidents), some friends learned to back off and not bring it up - or any other leftist tripe - while other friends gave me the cold shoulder and stopped talking to me altogether, to which I said "good riddance" and I have never looked back.
I don't think your problem is just liberals. My workplace largely consists of folks who are self-described 'conservative Republicans' and folks who 'just hate politics'. The real conflicts have been within the 'conservative Republican' camp, so much so that a recent corporate directive advised that there could be repercussions against those guilty of 'disruptive political discourse' on company time. The conflicts arise between the 'soft' Republicans (aka Rinos) and the true conservatives. The non-political folks say our lively discussions (aka arguments) are exactly what turn them off about politics. They say we argue endlessly and nothing changes and their votes don't count and if one party can't come to any agreement, what's the point?
Move to Texas. We cuss and discuss politics all the time here.
I listen to Rush everyday and anyone up on the second floor where my office is...is subjected to it. The usually have to go down to the first floor for some work down there (my Italian born co-worker who adores Hillary Clinton). O'h well.
