Why Can't My Liberal Friends Talk Politics
July 21, 2006 | jhw61

Posted on 07/21/2006 5:12:21 PM PDT by jhw61

Not once since Hizbollah kidnapped two Israeli soldiers, killed a young Israeli citizen have my liberal friends mentioned once in office conversation. Today I felt totally shut up when one of my co-workers made a comment about "my governor, Mitt Romney" and new benefit rules for MassHealth. I started to respond and was shut down by another co-worker who said O.k. let's not talk politics. I said "You democrates never want to talk politics." It's so frustrating. Day after day after I spend my evenings here on FR, my liberal co-workers talk about the next pair of curtains they are going to buy, wow, those Red Sox are so hot, etc.,...I'm surrounded by what I would say are people who really don't care about what goes on around them, unaware how what goes on in the world should affect them. My four fellow female co-workers never want to Discuss anything. Their feeling is people should be able to believe what they want, worship who they want and that's it. What is wrong with me. Why do I feel so isolated? Yes, I live in liberal Massachusetts and that should be the answer right there but I could use some encouraging comments. Thank you for considering my thread my wondersul fellow Freepers. There has to more to life than talking about curtains and paint doesn't there?

O.K. listen up.. I just pulled out my dad's interview with a local college kid...printed for his funeral and I was mistaken...sorry it was Utah not Omaha.... "The cutters were almost in D-Day action. The ship then made it down the North Sea, no longer from the Luftwaffe, but floating mines, going up the Themes to London, and in front of them was a little Polish ship, and he ran into a mine, All he saw was the whole floor plate buckle and inch and a half, and the whole ship buckled like that, and the Polish ship was goin in five minutes flat. They had a general cargo then, and they took off the general cargo, he was able to make it home by train that weekend, in Dundee, first officer almost put him in the brig for jumping ship in foreign port, but he whipped out his passport and told him he was both American and Scottish. He lost a day's pay for it to the hospital. He made it back through either the North Sea or through the English Channel, probably not the channel. Came all the way back to the states, and this time he was an engineer and made it over to Normandy beached, around D-20. Your were considered D-Day service within 60 days of serving then. They were anchored right off Utah, could see the dugouts. They were told seamen not to go ashore because there was nothing over there for idiots. The captain saw a landing craft tying up beside them, they had to unload 10,000 half ton bombs. Started unloading the bombs onto an amphibious kind of vehicle. An LST. 9 bombs into each duck. The had a black crew unloading, they were transportation crew. , there were two ducks, two blacks in each one, 9 bombs apiece, the beach had two big flags, dirve between them nowhere else. Told them where the beach was mined. These ducks, four guys, two ducks raced and met up with these mines and it was the biggest greenest orange flash, 18 bombs went off at once.

Whatever I don't care what you think...My Dad died last March and I know he was there. I made a mistake on the name of the Beachhead. whatever. I live in Massachusetts, that's bad enough..please don't call me a troll.

Yes, there certainly were Merchant Mariners present at D-Day, working a variety of supply tasks from ships and cutters, etc. (also see passage pasted below). Whether any specific claim for one particular person is verifiable is a different matter, but it's surely not out of the question that a Merchant Mariner was present at D-Day and even under fire, though probably not on the beaches (see below). fwiw, few people know that the US Merchant Marine suffered a HIGHER rate of fatalities than any branch of the armed services in WWII, due to all the U-boat sinkings of their ships in the frigid North Atlantic.

http://www.marad.dot.gov/Education/history/d_day.html

http://www.usmm.org/normandy.html

"Extending the artificial harbor were 89 derelict ships which had been damaged beyond repair. These ships made it to Normandy under their own power, crewed by volunteer mariners. Each was held in position by 4 small tugs while explosives blew their bottoms out, sinking them to create a Gooseberry or blockships. The tugs removed the crew from the ships. These breakwaters calmed the waters inside the harbor and eliminated the surf and breakers on the beach. This was done under fire from the beach and German planes.

The more information you provide, the more you will be questioned.

Given what you have provided so far, there are lots of questions that I have.

I am not questioning what is in your heart and what you believe, but I am having some doubts regarding the place (perspective) you are coming from.

The Merchant Marines where at Omaha Beach and helped create the sea barrier by towing the old ships to their locations before sinking the old ships. That was no easy task.

There are a more and more freepers that are down right paranoid now a days over possible trolls it is sad.

Please lighten up people. really come on.

"Sage advice from Rush Limbaugh... you cannot make friends with liberals... they will stab you in the back every single time..."

so true, I had several such personal experiences with peers when I was still rather liberal myself back in the '80s. My break with left-liberals came both over large social and political issues AND also as I observed that the most vicious back-stabbing people I ever knew were among the most pompous liberal blowhards around (they could talk a noble line but their all-consuming sense of righteous self-importance made them perfectly vicious when they wanted to do someone in via office politics, etc.).

You should consider yourself lucky...as soon as they start talking you'd PRAY they would shut up. Believe me.

It was so hard not to gloat.

It was so sweet. I started to mention it to the office moonbat and he just said Shut up,Ich, just shut up. He was moping for a long time. Hate to say it though, just today he called Mr. Bush an idiot for the Merkel Massage, and I had to agree that was pretty stupid.

Thank you for your support. Hey, it's Friday night and I'll admit to a few beers but one thing I'm definite on.. is my Dad's integrity. I miss him so...he died last March. He was born in Detroit, Michigan but his Dad returned his family to Scotland when he was 12. He attended school with an emphasis on technical courses, metalworking, woodworking, his favorite subjects were geography and history's, he graduated in 1941 when he was 15. Worked for a company called Boner-Long. Long story short, my Dad joined the Merchant Marines and his first ship was the Emily Dickinson.

What the hell is "appropriate"?

Bush Lied, People Died. Remember, they only want to supress views antithetical to their own.

Thanks. Goodness sakes do you think I'd be here for a couple years and be a troll. I simply wanted to share some of my frustrations being a conservative in a liberal state. Hello...Kerry and Kennedy sound familiar to you. I live with them every day and it aint pretty. This past Memorial Day in Quincy, Mass.. I went down and found myself a corner on Hancock Street for the parade...Held up a sign that said...Thank you Vets, I love you and I can't tell you how many nods and thank you backs I received. Thank God I had on sunglasses to hide the tears...followed the parade up to Merrymount Cemetery and listened to a Catholic priest tell his story about his combat days in Vietnam. I felt so honored to take part. I claimed I would do this on Free Republic thread and I did it because my word meant so much to myself. It was the best two hours I think I have ever be so honored to take part in. It was hot and I got a sunburn but so what. God Bless our Troops!

I had a liberal co-worker talking politics this week. He raises his voice to earthquake level and talks over the top of every counterpoint. Even fellow libbers don't want to listen to him.

This old truism seems to have been lost. Same goes for the dinner table. It's just bad manners.

I won't sit down and eat with a liberal...

Sometimes you have no choice. No really, having liberal friends is not the end of the world but it is definitely not fun at many times in our stressful, heartfelt lives we choose to lead.
