Prayer Request, Stroke Information Request
RushCrush | 7/21/06 | RushCrush

Posted on 07/21/2006 7:27:52 AM PDT by RushCrush

Urgently requesting prayers from my fellow FReepers for my mother. I just received a call that they think she had a stroke this morning, she is only 58.

Freepers who know about strokes and treatments, please write. I know you all are the best and can provide me with the best advice and information.

Am traveling to Iowa so not sure when I will be able to post again.

Please keep my mom and my family in your prayers!

Thank you

My dad had a stroke.

His was caused by a clot.

Anyway, he had no speech and no use of his right arm after the stroke, also some memory and balance problems.

The good news, with therapy, he was pretty much back to normal within 3 months. The memory issues still show up when he's tired as does the slurred speech, but to the casual observer, you'd never know he had a stroke.

You did not say why stroke was suspected.

I understand a paramedic can make the diagnosis by inspecting the eyes....we called 911 for a neighbor who had severe cardiac problems and were, of course, assuming he'd collapsed from a coronary.

Within moments, the medicos had what ended up being the correct diagnosis - stroke.

Update: Thank you all so much, I don't have much time to write but it turns out my mom had an aneurysm. They were able to repair it surgically on Friday afternoon and she came through the surgery fine. We are still so worried. She is in the ICU on a ventilator/ feeding tube. But luckily has been moving her arms and legs. Just today she opened her eyes. She is still in a light coma though.

We are preparing ourselves for a long recovery with ups and downs.

Thank you so much for keeping us in your prayers.

If any FReepers have gone through this, your advice is much appreciated.

Thanks for the update. I will continuing praying.

Music. If she has a favorite type of music, singers, a band, make or buy cds or tapes for her. Your mom could still hear it, even in a light coma.

I made my mom Johnny Mathis tapes (video and music).

Good afternoon.

Good luck to your mother and you.

Hopefully they got her on oxygen quickly, followed by a clot busting cocktail as fast as they could.

Good afternoon.

Tell your mom to not even think about giving up. No matter how frustrating the after affects are, don't give up.

There comes a time when you can see improvement and it can spur you on.

I had my stroke three years ago when I was 54. I won't ever be the witty war dog I used to be but I function well enough and I keep on trucking. Hopefully she will, too.

You know my Mom loves Johnny Mathis too :)

We will definitely put a CD together for her when they will let us play one. Thank you for the advice, it is so appreciated. RC

I have been doing so and will continue doing so. I'm glad to hear she came through the surgery OK and will pray for a speedy and full recovery.
