WASHINGTON The House on Wednesday failed to override President Bush's first veto of his five-and-a-half-year administration, cast earlier in the day when he rejected a bill that would have provided more federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.
The vote, 235-193, was less than the two-thirds needed to forward the bill to the Senate for its consideration.
"If this bill were to become law, American taxpayers for the first time in our history would be compelled to fund the deliberate destruction of human embryos. Crossing this line would be a grave mistake and would needlessly encourage a conflict between science and ethics that can only do damage to both and harm our nation as a whole," Bush wrote in a letter to the House explaining his decision to veto the measure.

Curious how if it had been overridden this would be posted about 10 times, when it goes down no one even mentions it.

I took too long to use the veto pen.

This is a complicated issue, both ethically and medically. I have been reading as much as I can on this subject. It's difficult to find an unbiased authority.Embryonic stem cell research has become a fashionable cause. But I think if embryonic stem cells had so much potential, other than to cause tumors in test animals, the medical industry would be pouring millions of dollars into the research. In any case, I admire George Bush for standing his ground unflinchingly on this issue, as he has on many other issues in the face of almost violent adversity.

I to am glad he is standing on principle and promoting a culture of life instead of the liberal culture of death. Forcing me via taxes to pay for man to act like God is just plain wrong no matter how you slice it.

Your commentary is one of the most intelligent I have seen on the topic... I call this Frankenstein medicine... and yes, this has become a "fashionable cause" as you say...
One thing I never hear asked when discussing issues like this is... What if they create something we cannot get rid of?

I agree with you completely on this subject.
It is also a VERY good place on which to use the "Follow the Money" guidance.

That the point. NO one is saying they cannot DO the research. All we are saying is WE, via our Government, will not be paying for it.
