Darwin's Beagle ship replica plan [for his 200th birthday]
BBC News ^ | 19 July 2006 | Staff

Posted on 07/19/2006 3:55:15 AM PDT by PatrickHenry

Plans are being drawn up to build a £3.3m working replica of the boat that took Charles Darwin around the world at Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire.

Fundraising for the project, which would mark the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth in 2009, is under way.

The aim is to built a seaworthy vessel identical to the HMS Beagle on the outside, but with a modern interior.

Darwin, who showed how natural selection could explain evolution, sailed on the Beagle between 1831-36.

Sitting opposite him on the expedition was mate and surveyor John Lort Stokes.

One of Stokes' descendents, Pembrokeshire farmer David Lort Philips, together with commercial yacht master Peter McGrath, have founded the Beagle Project Pembrokeshire.

Mr McGrath said the ship would look identical to the original Beagle on the outside but would have a 21st century interior with diesel auxiliary engines and generators.

Charles Darwin developed his early theories on board the Beagle

He said he hoped the fished vessel would inspire the scientists of the future and be used by researchers and scientists from across the world.

"Externally it will be exactly the same but we want it to do some serious scientific work and you would not want the crew living like they did in the 18th Century," he said.

The pair have spent three years putting their plans together and aim to raise the money through private and institutional investors along with public subscription.

"With all the Darwin 200 celebrations there is not one big project to focus the attention on," added Mr McGrath.

"I know the effect a square rigger has on young people - it's a jaw dropping site.

"But we do not want this just to be a replica - we want it to have genuine scientific benefits.

"We have started the fundraising. Construction will take 14 months and it has to be finished by early 2009.

"She will be built in Milford Haven and it will be her home. But what we want to do when she is built is visit the significant sights in Darwin's and the Beagle's life."

Researchers believe the original remains of the 27m-long Navy brig, that was sold for scrap in 1870, are embedded in a marsh near Potton Island in Essex.

Darwin, who published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859, came fourth in a poll run by the BBC in 2002 to find the public's greatest Briton of all time.

His voyage on the Beagle allowed him to form the basis for much of his later work.

Evolution is NOT a capitalistic system else evolution could stand on its own and would not need GOVERNMENT to make it the law of the land and demand we the people fund it. It is socialistic at its very base.

What law would that be? I don't know of any laws that say "you will Evolve."

As far as TEACHING Evolution, it is just like those evil teachers that teach the Earth is billions of years old, that Gravity behaves differently under different conditions and similar Socialist topics.

And don't get me started on those MATHEMATICS and CHEMISTRY Commies.

I started reading the posts, but had to quit. Unbelievable. Anyway, this is a worthy project. Would love to be able to go on board.
Recently went on board the 3 replica ships in Jamestown.
Amazing that people could endure the cramped and unhealthy conditions for so many months. Darwin suffered with motion sickness throughout the entire 5-year trip. That in itself deserves some praise.

"...the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth in 2009."

All this fuss about some guy who hasn't even been born yet?

The sentence I highlighted in my first reply to you should answer your question. I enjoy watching the Evo/Non-Evo arguments with popcorn but I dismiss any argument that uses the "intelligence" of a person or persons as a prop to validate one side of the debate. That argument style is usually employed by the evolutionists.

As I didn't mention intelligence, and as there was a strong implication of Fitzroy's high intelligence in my "article", I think that the conclusion you drew says more about what you are looking for when you read this stuff than what I wrote. Just because most educated people believe something it doesn't follow that it is true.

Don't you think it would be even more interesting if you guys would build an exact replica, using 4000 year old techniques, of Noah's ark, fill it with every living thing on Earth and float it for a year on the open ocean? Surely you could raise donations for such an important undertaking? It would put any Beagle to shame.

I'll contribute.

In 50 years that ship [HMS Ark Royal] will be a dinosaur.

Already is. She went to to the breaker's yard in 1981.

Sir Arthur Keith (Evolution and Ethics) noted:

So rather than find a quote of someone else's opinion on Hitler and evolution (even though that is not the context of evolution in that citation, another creationsist misrepresentation; when will they stop lying), can you find a 1st person reference? Something directlky attributable to the Nazis? Hitler never made any, not was there usch elements in the Nazis platform. If you look at the history, Hilter and the Nazis are revealed to have a warped creationist philosophy. It seems creationists have the same difficulty finding evidence for the political machinations of evolution as they do to support creationism. Unless, of course, one considers creationism an example of creative art.

The first ten or twelve paragraphs of the section on races and nations in Mein Kampf sound so much like Darwin's works that it's hard to tell the difference.

"Nobody was killed because of Darwin. You are completely wrong, Mr. Holden."

You are the one who is wrong. Plenty of people have died for believing the Theory of Evolution.

NO the government is to protect the unalienable RIGHTS endowed by the Creator which are Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Darwinist don't even make the cut as they disavow the very Creator that created their very souls. So they had to pervert that Constitution in order to SURVIVE the socialistic method of life.

It is interesting that you refuse to acknowledge your demonstratable errors and instead, when corrected on a subject, bring up another irrelevant or false claim to distract from your previous mistake. I have never understood why you engage in such behavior, Mr. Holden, as it does nothing to strengthen the credibility of your claims.

Hitler took advantage of the communist method that ruled with iron fist of death and destruction. Kinda like the mentality of the evolutionists that fears God will make their fairy tale null and void. So they get the 'supreme' law of the land to make them have credibility and breath that necessary life into their nostrils the tax payer dollar in a government ruled school system.
