Corker Says New Poll Shows Him Pulling Away (TN GOP Senate Primary)

The Bob Corker for Senate campaign on Tuesday released a survey of 600 likely Republican voters that showed Bob Corker with 46% of the vote, Ed Bryant 24% and Van Hilleary 17%.

The poll was completed this past Thursday, the evening before early voting began, Corker officials said.

Glen Bolger, the Corker campaign’s pollster, said, “These results make it clear that Bob Corker remains in the driver’s seat for the Republican nomination. Both Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary have yet to offer voters a compelling positive reason to support their candidacies, and as result trail by significant margins as voters head to the polls.”

Corker campaign manager Ben Mitchell said, “With just 16 days until the polls close on Aug. 3, voters can expect Van Hilleary and Ed Bryant to continue their negative and misleading campaigns in a desperate attempt to revive their failing efforts. But we trust Tennessee voters to see their efforts for what they are - last second desperate attack ads from two career politicians turned registered lobbyists.”

The poll of 600 likely Republican primary voters was conducted by Glen Bolger of Public Opinion Strategies on July 10-11, 13. The margin of error is +/- 4.0%.

No runoff. It looks like Corker wins this race a la Isakson two years ago in Georgia.

While Corker continues spreading the LIES that he's a "conservative". Oops, he'd call that a deperate attack.

I don't think we have runoffs in this state if someone doesn't win a majority. I think it goes to the top vote getter period since there isn't much time to have a statewide primary runoff since the November elections would be 90 days away. I could be wrong.

It's too late but Van Hilleary should never had gotten in this race and should get out endorsing Ed Bryant. If Corker wins then Harold Ford, Jr - D, has a shot at winning since he will have all the big Dem guns helping him (they want Frist' seat) and Dem Gov. Bredesen is running for reelection and will win and can help.

Corker is worse than Lamar!

I'm behind Ed Bryant. I think he's a more solid conservative. Van Hilleary is a good man and comes off well one on one, but he's a dud campaigning and made lots of mistakes when he ran for governor in 2000.

Bryant came real close in the 2002 Senate primary against Lamar! but Alexander had the resume and the name recognition. Both are more qualified than Corker but each kept their gun powder dry. Corker got off very early with ads (pretending he's a conservative and, naturally, called it an attack to point out he's not) and I'm afraid that was enough.

Alright, I will tell them to support Bryant . Is Bryant pro-gun ? If so, what is his NRA rating ?

Yes he is. I don't now his rating and I couldn't find anything on the NRA website where they report those.

This poll is: 1) sponsored by the Corker campaign, and 2) was taken before either Bryant or Hilleary had a chance to have much advertising on television. Since they didn't have the war chest that Corker does, they had to wait until late to begin TV advertising. The poll is probably timed now by the Corker campaign because they realize that things will tighten up after the ads have a chance to run.

I agree that Hilleary never should have gotten into this race. Bryant ran a very creditable campaign against Alexander four years ago, who, for better or worse, has become somewhat of an icon in this state among many. It was pretty much understood from that time that Bryant would be running for the Senate this year. The same could not be said of Hilleary. He was not planning on being in this race. He was planning on being governor, but ran a lackluster campaign against Bredesen two years ago, allowing a Democrat to become governor. Bryant declared early for this race. Hilleary jumped in later, knowing that he would be competing for the same subset of voters as Bryant.

Hilleary was a good Congressman; but, if Corker wins this one, much of the blame can be laid at Hilleary's feet.

Bryant is a good man and was an excellent conservative Congressman. We will really be missing an opportunity if we let Corker buy this one.

Ed Bryant was my Congressman for years. He is the only Congresscritter I have ever felt represented me.

"I (Ed Bryant) support the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees our right to keep and bear arms.

As U.S. Attorney for West Tennessee, appointed by President George H. Bush, I’ve seen how gun-control laws only penalize law abiding Tennesseans and do nothing to stop a person intent on committing a violent crime with a gun.

In Congress, I was proud to have served on the House Judiciary Committee where I worked to protect the gun-ownership rights of law-abiding Tennesseans and earned a lifetime rating of “A” from the National Rifle Association, as well as their endorsement for each re-election. "

Does that help?

Yes , I will turn out my crew in Tennessee for Bryant . Just wanted to be sure . If Bryant is polling higher than Hilleary , Hilleary should step out .

Ed Bryant is my dog in this hunt, but he has run a very lackluster campaign. If he loses, he has no one else to blame but himself.

Bryant isn't a multimillionaire who can just spend money at the drop of a hat like Corker can. Having Hilleary in the race taking votes from him isn't helping, either. This should be a Bryant vs. Corker race, plain and simple.

I find it impossible to believe that Corker could be out in front... even in this state. His political ads with his mama doing all the talking would surely turn off the manly redneck types. He comes across as very weak to those here who have never picked up a paper in their lives.

The reality is that all three are in the race and Ed has run a poor campaign. Its just the reality of the situation. He will have my vote no matter, but he just did not get his message out to he voters.

So you had rather have 2 corrupt Fords in Washington, than one semi-liberal Republican? We at least might have a chance with Corker, who I will not vote for in the primary.

I would vote for the devil himself, before I would let a Ford in as Senator.

That seems rather harsh. I don't understand why people get upset with people who run during Primaries. It is bad enough that we get very little choice in our elections. Now it seems people just want one or two people running. I understand that maybe Hilleary could possibly take some votes from Bryant, but couldn't there be a chance that maybe Hilleary could win? And if not, maybe next time with his name out there he could gain some traction. I feel the same way when liberals yell and scream about the process. Everyone has a right to run good or bad.

This isn't a liberal Republican state, this is a Conservative one. I'm sick to death of watching these phony liberal RINOs hijack our primaries and f*ck us AND the party when they're in office. I voted for Scumquist in '94 and all we got in the end was Bredesen. After supporting Bryant in '02, I urged all the fence-sitters to vote for Lamar! in the general because it was "important" that we get back the Senate. I did my patriotic duty to restore majority control back to the GOP, despite the fact I consider Lamar! to be less than useless.

No, I'm not doing it again, because this is seriously violating my conscience. I neither want Ford nor Corker to be Senator. I won't actively urge people to vote against him if he manages to hijack the primary with a plurality, I just simply will NOT reward Chattanooga Chafee with MY vote.

I feel the same way, but there is simply too much at stake with the WOT to take a chance.

You have have to do what you have to do, but I just hope that there are not enough voters that feel like you do, and stay home if it is Corker.
