U.S. Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo., has opened up a fundraising lead of more than 2-to-1 over his likely Democratic rival, state Auditor Claire McCaskill.
The latest campaign reports, filed Monday, showed Talent with $7.12 million in the bank as of June 30, compared with $2.78 million for McCaskill. Such an edge gives Talent far more cash for television ads, which both need to define themselves and each other in the final 16 weeks before the Nov. 7 election.

But the Senate contest also could be affected by the hefty spending already under way by the coalition seeking a state constitutional amendment in November to protect all forms of stem-cell research allowed under federal law. McCaskill backs the proposal, while Talent opposes it.
The Missouri Coalition for Lifesaving Cures reported that it has already spent $12.4 million, with $3.3 million still in the bank. The group has been airing nine-minute TV spots in recent weeks on stations across the state.

The talented Talent is on his way to a 2nd term. I believe that MacCaskill is roadkill. It will undoubtedly be close but W flying in for Talent will help get him over the finish line.
Hope you're right. I am "cautiously optimistic" but concerned over all the money outside groups are apt to throw into this race.
I agree. I've put Talent in the "lock" column a month ago. Burns is on the cusp, Santorum now has fallen into the "unlikely," Kennedy, Kean, and McKitrick (sp?) in Wa all have moved positive in my book. If Burns holds, I think we have a net gain of two in the Senate. If Santorum pulls it out, net 3-4.
You may be right, but you sure wouldn't know it from the MSM and, like it or not, sheer volume of noise (at least $16 million worth according to the StlToday article) does sway some voters.

Outside groups have been involved in Missouri politics for years. yes they have money too.
The anti abortion groups will make stem cells a focal point, regardless of how little stem cells have to do with actual fetal abortion or human cloning.
Who cares like you say? They are already doing the research and I see no harm if it does indeed bring cures for some diseases.
