Israeli girls write messages on a shell at a heavy artillery position near Kiryat Shmona, in northern Israel, next to the Lebanese border, Monday, July 17, 2006
My heart does go out to them. Nobody knew Hizbollah was going to turn this into a bloody conflict. The expatriates with family and businesses there have resources. The tourists and others, though, are a different matter. God keep them safe.

Not surprising the French have a more efficient, well-oiled retreat going.
I've been on vacation for two weeks, and have been missing the news (well, not really missing it all that much, just not watching or reading about it).
Prayers for American and Israeli citizens and troops. Sounds like they've got some terrorist fish in a barrel.
LOL.
Being pretty much the historian, my sense of what's a long time ago is much different than most people's...people talk to me like 1800 was forever ago, but to me, it was not much longer than yesterday...The era of Abraham, now that was a long time ago.
But not remembering the lessons of the 1970s and 80s is stupid.
For some reason everytime I see that city name Kiryat Shmona, the son My Sherona pops in my head.
Perhaps this is one good thing to come from this war--a remembering and a "Never Forget" moment.
Boy, you got that right. And within each of the Sunni and Shiite groups, there are various movements, too...some of which hate each other.
Israel can unite them for awhile, but give them an excuse, and they bash each other, sometimes bloodily.

I fell in love with history at 7! No teacher ever could shake that focus. Give a young kid the right books and see what happens...
But I must have been destined for it. I remember watching the Kennedy-Nixon election returns, and even when Khruschev came to the US and they wouldn't let him into Disneyland. As a five year old, I thought that was very mean.
Exactly- and it was so funny reading the statement this morning from (LOL) Saddam - warning Syria not to trust the Iranians.

Ya wonder...could having fought long and fruitless wars with Iran colored his POV any?
Well...isn't Richard Cohen special??
I am not Jewish, but I am sure I would be even more angry if I were.
