Yes you are right, it should be left up to the restaurant owner but here is the result of that. Many restaurant owners want both smoking and non smoking customers and they put us all in the same space, the people stay where they belong but the smoke doesn't.

I was with a party of 11 people last night at a local steak house. Smoking was only allowed at the bar where smokers could also eat. When they set up our table for 11 it was right beside the bar with only a low wall between. We might have well be seated at the bar because the smoke was thick at our table. All 11 people refused the table and we were ready to leave when they hastily found us another spot.

The point that I am trying to make here is that every non smoker that did sit there (beside the bar) last night (and every night), is going to be annoyed. They are going to remember that "smoking sections don't work" unless they are separate rooms. Restaurant owners who don't realize this are hurting their own cause.

So, let me see. You chose the place to begin with, then when you complained to the Establishment they accommodated you. So what is your problem?

If ya don't like it don't go there.

Any business owner today who can still allow a smoking section knows enough to install the big smoke eaters.

The one tavern here in town installed 3 huge smoke eaters.  You couldn't see the smoke let alone smell it.

That's how the Casino's do it in Vegas.  Big smoke eaters.  People are smoking all over the place, but  the air is clear as glass.

WRONG..........I know many non-smokers that have no problem at all.

2 weeks ago we had dinner with friend. There were a total of 5 of us, my husband and I smoke cigarettes, one friend is a cigar smoker, and his son and daughter-in-law are non-smokers. The cigar smoker, who was also the host, asked for a table in non-smoking. His son, the non-smoker said "What are you talking about, Dad?" Dad replied "We'll be here all summer, you're only here for the weekend, I want the 2 of you to be comfortable." Son replied "Dad, we NEVER sit in a non-smoking section, it's full of prissy people." I about busted a gut when he said that. And this is no trailer trash type of guy. He's a 27 yo up and coming corporate executive with an MBA. As is his wife.

Poor baby.

why not try another restaurant and leave the people who want to be in that environment alone?

You should have chosen to dine at a smoke free establishment. Here is what I tell anyone who comes into my establishment and complains of smoke: "If you do not find my accommodations adequate, you are welcome to choose another establishment to dine/drink at." Plain and simple. Make no mistake that you are free to choose which businesses you patronize. You do not have the right to demand which customers business owners are, or are not allowed to cater too.
