Lebanon asks Turkey to help mediate
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
ANKARA, Turkey

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday spoke by phone with his Lebanese counterpart Fuad Saniora, who requested Turkish mediation for a cease-fire to end the spiraling violence in the Middle East, an official said.

The Turkish premier told Saniora Turkey would "make every kind of contribution" for a cease-fire, Erdogan's spokesman, Akif Beki, told The Associated Press, but gave no further information.

Predominantly Muslim Turkey has been trying to play a mediating role between Israel and Palestinians and has criticized Israel, a close ally, for using excessive force in its offensives in the Middle East.

Earlier on Saturday, Erdogan racheted up the criticism, accusing the country of engaging in ruthless violence.

Erdogan also called on the powerful Group of Eight nations, currently meeting in Russia, to reach a joint decision that would allow the United Nations Security Council to establish a cease-fire to end the spiraling violence.

The G-8 countries, the United States, Russia, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy and Canada, were expected to issue a declaration on the Lebanon crisis.

"No reason can ever justify the raining of bombs on innocent civilians, the destruction of cities that exceed the limits of mercy," Erdogan said during a ceremony to launch a housing project in the eastern city of Artvin, according to the Anatolia news agency.

"I appeal to the G-8 countries: the G-8 must reach a common decision, the U.N. Security Council must declare a cease-fire," he said.

At least 88 people have died in Lebanon, most of them civilians, in a four-day Israeli offensive sparked by Hezbollah's capture of two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid. On the Israeli side, at least 15 have been killed; four civilians and 11 soldiers.

Also Saturday, Turkey evacuated some 30 of its citizens from Lebanon by bus through Syria.

A bus carrying mostly Turkish businessmen and tourists crossed into Turkey at the Turkish-Syrian border crossing of Yaylidere early Saturday. It also carried two French citizens, Anatolia said. Several Lebanese and French citizens also arrived at Yaylidere in private cars or taxis to escape the fighting, the agency reported.

I've been watching MSNBC this morning and so far they seem very good and unbiased. They had a military analyst on saying how great the Israeli army is, that when they hit the lighthouse they only took the top off of it not the whole building.

Also, just across the AP wire they read that Hezbollah sunk an Egyptian ship with 12 members aboard.

"I couldn't believe Beckel's answer"

Reality is intruding. It takes all-out warfare to clarify these people's minds.

To agree on ANYTHING would be unlikely.

I was watching CNN Intl earlier and they were interviewing only Israelis who would talk about how frightened they were. Guess they needed to encourage their Hezbollah allies with this show of fear. They also interviewed a Pali LE officer who supposedly had not been paid in six months. He was whining about how he was supposed to feed his family. Trust me, this man has never missed a meal.

I despise CNN - you have to pick through their stuff with fine-toothed comb. And will add my name to those who think FOX is letting us down with news of this urgent event.

"Reporter asking a Palestinian in Gaza for comments. Palestinian says his own gov't is failing them, that they are arrested or in hiding "maybe under the floor" and not helping them. Talked about the next election, implying they should be voted out. Then the man said this all started when Palis kidnapped Israeli soldiers!!! The reporter was NOT satisfied with that answer so he then starts in urging him to criticize Bush.

Pathetic, that reporter! He found a Pali who actually blamed the Palestinian gov't for this...and just had to try to put an anti-Israeli/anti-American twist.

Remember that this is a CNN defense mechanism. CNN has a history (which they ADMITTED TO) of being easily intimidated by Arab terrorists. If the Hamas Hoodlums come back to CNN about airing this, the reporter can plead that he tried to get him on tho a "correct" topic.

CNN hasn't been all bad, but that one reporter they have in Gaza needs to go back to his hotel bar and stay there.

Good point...As much as I dislike Beckel most of the time for his sarcasm and cute answers, he does at times seem reasonable.

I turned CNN off during that interview, been going back and forth but mostly on MSNBC. FOX stinks today. I'm trying to find confirmation of the story about the Egyptian ship but can't seem to find it yet.

Except that, in both cases, the Jewish state's assailants are indeed pursuing a territorial ambition - to unseat Israel from its own sovereign lands.

I just sent messages to my three congressional reps to give Israel whatever support they need, up to including bombing Tehran.

I'm sure Boxer, Feinstein and Sam Farr (the congressman with a U.N. flag posted outside his capital office door) will do the right thing. As usual.

I agree. Fox's coverage has improved, but still isn't as good as it could be. I'm interested too to know the details of the other ship that was hit.
