The surprise is they're willing to admit it.
Exactly. Everyone knows Syria has been working behind the scenes, but they wouldn't come out and say it unless they were prepared for full-scale war.

"This is pretty big news. For some reason, you seem convinced that neither Iran or Syria is going to jump into the fray, but right here we have Syria saying it's going to do that. "Our full support" implies military support." Nope. If Syria was going to jump in with military support, they'd keep quiet as long as possible to give them a potential surprise element.
Won't happen. This is Arab happy talk, nothing more.
Neither Iran nor Syria will save Hezbollah from Israel this year. Carve it into stone. Bookmark this post. Quote me on it.
And while you're at it, take note that Syria isn't mobilizing its Reserves.

Notice the quote doesn't actually say Syria supports Hezbollah, only Reuters lead does.. the quote only says it supports Lebanon.

Syria was backing off. What's happened?
Are you kidding? Somebody (Hamas) put a gun to Assad's head.
That's why there are no moderate Muslims.

I disagree with this statement..the lebanese people are perfectly happy to go on with their lives, earn a living etc..it's huzbull(shyte)ah that is causing the problems and who syria is aligning themselves with..IMHO

" If Syria isn't mobilizing their Army, then they are just mouthing off Hezbollah-happy-talk."
As you, I think the little lion is just going along with the folks that menter him each day. Little or nothing will come from it. Israel could quickly take out all buildings in Damascus they designate as fair game and the A Rabs could do nothing to stop it other then loose a lot of AAA and SAM sites and aircraft in quick time.

"Our full support" implies military support.
True, but communiques from such regimes are so often drowning in bombast it's hard to know what can be taken literally and what is just hot air for their demented subjects. My inexpert opinion is that they mean to "support" with fervent denunciations of Israel plus whatever supplies and weapons they can still get into Lebanon. Doubt they would invite direct armed conflict with Israel, though it may still come to that since all the past Syrian support of Hezbollah and Hamas is already an act of war. Israel has plenty of justification for hitting Syria hard, but whether either government (Syria or Israel) will let it come to that, who knows?

What do you think "and its heroic resistance" means? Syria doesn't give a crap about the Christians in Lebanon. When it talks about the Lebanese people, it's referring to their "kind" of guys.

I, for one, don't know what to make of it.
But after Clinton I can parse statements. The "Syrian people fully support" may not mean the Syrian military might would be used to support. Just that the people support.
See what the Clinton years have done to me?

I take their statement to mean that they will continue to supply Hezbollah with weapons and whatever passes for Syrian intelligence.
But when Israel is ready, they might well deliver an aerial package on the offices of Hamas and Hezbullah in Damascus as well. This statement gives them complete justification.

Southack doesn't 'hijack' threads.
He contributes well-thought out posts with cogent information.
You may feel quite free to disagree with him, but let's not make things up, OK? Otherwise people will begin to think that you're just trying to hijack the thread......
