Syria tells Hizbollah to stop rocketing Israel

LONDON - Syria is telling Lebanon’s Hizbollah movement to stop firing rockets at Israel in a conflict sparked by the capture of two Israeli soldiers, Syria’s ambassador to London said on Friday.

Hizbollah, an Islamist group represented in the Lebanese government, wants to trade the captives for prisoners held in Israel. In an attempt to increase domestic pressure on Hizbollah, Israeli planes have attacked Beirut and southern Lebanon, killing at least 60 people.

When asked whether Syria was telling Hizbollah to stop firing rockets at Israel, the ambassador, Sami Khiyami, told the BBC: “Of course.”

“This is a movement that is completely independent. We have good relations with it,” he said. Hizbollah was created to fight Israel’s former occupation of southern Lebanon and is backed by both Iran and Syria.

“Syria does not wish at all to be involved in the conflict. It’s really seeking to ease down tensions and to reach a settlement that would stop completely the violence.”

The violence in Lebanon is the fiercest since 1996, when Israel launched a 17-day blitz on Hizbollah strongholds in the south.

“The most important thing today is to concentrate on stopping the violence, on negotiating exchange of prisoners and on devising ways and means to bring peace to this poor Middle East,” Khiyami said.

“This is a movement that is completely independent.

Gee, that wasn't the impression I got from reading UN resolutions 1559, 1644, and 1680...

It's out of Syrian's control now since they've allowed Iran to play them as a fool for so long now.

Has anyone even seen the ferret-faced eye doc lately, or is still hiding under his bed?

I'll file this with the request by a pro wrestling coach telling his wrestler to stop hitting people with a folding chair.

Memo to Syria: Yeah, right! And pigs fly, the world is flat, the moon is made of green cheese, and the tooth fairey's sled is pulled by six purple hippos.

Don't fall for their shuck and jive, Israel!

Is anyone else wondering about how the Saddams WMD's that were moved to Syria come in to play in all of this? If, for some strange reason Israel and or the U.S. had a pretty good idea where some of those sites might be wouldn't this be a perfect opportunity to do some housekeeping?

I've gotten the idea that the Hizbullah gang wasn't prepared for Israel's huge response. I really don't think anyone on Hizbullah's side was ready for it.

I've wondered the same thing, and yes, I think we and Israel might have an idea where they are. It would be a perfect time for the US and Israel to do a bit of housekeeping!

Syria does not wish at all to be involved in the conflict.

Okay. Just feed the assassins, house them, arm them, and turn them loose. Nobody will think Syria is involved.

Now that was funny. I guess all the weapons and money going from Syria to Hezbollah is just an accident.

Israel attacks, Syria offers concessions.

That wasn't really a concession. All he did was read from the Hiz talking points. When Syria stops talking about prisoner exchanges and tells them to give back the guys they kidnapped, THAT'll be a concession.

LOL... sounds like this ambassador took a page out of the "How to Answer Stupid Questions Asked by Idiot Journalists - By Donald Rumsfeld" book...

Just you wait until the Hezzies get their strongly worded memo from the UN... Boy, then they'll be sorry!

Like UN Resolution 1559? Yeah, that worked. NOT.

“Syria does not wish at all to be involved in the conflict. It’s really seeking to ease down tensions and to reach a settlement that would stop completely the violence.”

As I predicted, Syria and Iran are hanging Hezbollah out to dry.

None of the major regional powers are falling for Al Qaeda's trickery...tricks that are designed to fool the wider Islamic populace into becoming combatants (e.g. terrorists pretending to be Iranians firing missiles at Israel).
