Seven katyusha missiles fell today in Safed. In response to the order of army authorities to enter shelters we walked down dusty stairs to a place we never thought we would need to enter. As we arrived the bottom of the staircase we met up with a strong smell of mildew produced from the locked up room with no windows and piles of old dusty books stored in crates. Luckily, one of the neighbors brought in a fan to facilitate breathing.
A woman sitting on a stool, and surrounded by four frightened little girls was a young emissary from Moscow who had arrived for a short vacation to Safed. An elderly man sat behind engrossed in the words of Psalms he was uttering.
A neighbor, whose clothing disclosed no connection to religion, turned to the children and told them to recite a chapter in Psalms word by word after her so that "we would all be guarded from above - since children's prayers are most desirable". I patted my neighbor on the back and turned to the woman from Moscow saying, "You see, she's our Chabadnikit".
We listened to the news and couldn't believe we were part of the events. Thinking out loud I told my neighbors, "How could the news report deal with any other news item besides our dreadful situation here?" And then I corrected myself thinking, "Actually, when we would hear the news about Kiryat Shemona residents 'living' in shelters, although it would bother us, it would not be our only concern, the same goes with the way people in safer locations regard our situation...
...Today is the 17th of Tamuz, the numeric value of 17 is the word 'tov'= good. May our realization and increased concern for other people's plight hasten the coming of Messiah that would turn this day into a holiday, earning it the genuine connotation of goodness for all.
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.

I hope they are safe and do not carry too much mental burden. My uncle is in Sfat right now, I called to see if he was OK (he is) and said only a few missiles made it to Sfat, but that Haifa and Carmiel are taking the brunt of the attacks.
Thank you. Very sobering.
Prayers for their safety and fresh air....
