let's not forget that Iran has been cozying up with N Korean lately. That's the tie that could bring this all together into one hugh mess

If this is true, Iran is very bold.

They may already have a nuclear weapon.

"I think Japan should take our place in N. Korea, which would enable a redeployment to the Mideast."

This is an excellent suggestion; however, the SK's would probably be against this.

"...We've been hearing about missiles falling on Israeli soil for some time now. Today we're hearing about enemy missiles hitting a place called "Haifa." Is this any different than the countless rockets that have hit Israel before, courtesy of Hamas and Hezbollah? Apparently, it is very different.

As you can see, most of the missiles from Lebanon have fallen on the very north end of Israel, along the border. Haifa, by contrast, is well south of the border. In other words, an enemy who is capable of striking, and inclined to strike, Haifa is capable of striking (and likely inclined to strike) much of Israeli territory. More importantly, Haifa is the third largest city in Israel, with a population of just under 300,000. So, yes, hitting Haifa is a very big deal. Allison Kaplan Sommer elaborates:

Imagine for a minute that there were terrorist groups sitting in Mexico. Every once in a while, they acted up, and there were incursions into small towns in southern Texas -- a missile was lobbed, the citizens had to go into bomb shelters. It would be horrible, everyone would wring their hands, every attempt possible would be done to stop it. That would be one thing.

Now compare that to a situation in which those terrorists got hold of longer-range missiles. They started firing into downtown Houston and downtown Dallas. And no one can tell if they might just start aiming for San Diego or Los Angeles.

A completely different story, no? A different world.

At this point, there will be no such thing as "overreaction" when it comes to the average Israeli. The rubicon has been crossed.

And when the rubicon ain't happy, ain't nobody happy..."

Isn't it interesting that Chavez in Venezuala, buddy buddy's with Iran and Syria. just so happened to say YESTERDAY that they'd be cutting off CITGO gas from over 1,800 outlets around the US causing those stations to scramble to try and find new suppliers.

Other missile launches the Iranians werent at:

Iranian military representatives were said to have attended North Korea's Taepo Dong-2 missile launch.

At least 10 members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attended the Taepo Dong-2 intermediate missile launch. South Korea's official Yonhap news agency said the IRGC personnel were senior engineers who sought to learn from Pyongyang's missile program.

Yonhap reported on July 1 that the IRGC engineers participated in the preparation for the Taepo Dong launch. The news agency said the IRGC has been examining Chinese-origin missile technology for Iranian procurement.

South Korean sources said Iran and North Korea could be planning a project for the joint development of new liquid missile propellant. Yonhap quoted the sources as saying that the propellant could be used for both Iranian and North Korean missiles

I have seen Dennis before, and he is right there with his responses.

Today, he went around the ball park telling us that Iran was invoved and controlling these hostile actions.

This FR thread and the initial report, dutifully reported by the Freeper, is nearly one hour old now, at 6:30 p.m. Eastern/3:30 p.m. Pacific.

It is said both Fox and CNN have stated that the Haifu attack was by Iranian Guard.

These reports were seen Freepers. They are reporting what the Fox and CNN outlets said.

However, why is there not written source, or written confirmation, or something in definite written form on both CNN and FOX 'fast moving' websites--or elsewhere regarding such a potentially dramatic turn of events? Just "Major Escalation", but no mention of "Iranian Guard". I just don't see it yet.

Better now while we have bases and might in the region. Better now than before Iran gets nukes. Better now to stomp the crap out of the #1 terrorist state.

However, despite the sabre rattling, Iran is scared to death of Israel and the US, so it will do everything it can to stay out of the current hostilities in any public way -- though they are prime sponsors of Hezbollah.

Thanks for posting that. I've been reading various sources for about a year (sorry, no links) that the Iranians had assets in southern Lebanon. As soon as I heard that Hizbullah denied firing the missiles into Haifa, I suspected that Iran's dirty fingers were involved.

I'm not sure I understand the importance of whether this was a "rocket" or a "missile" because we knew from the outset due to the range that it could only have been an Iranian supplied, longer range weapon.

This issue is whether the missile simply came from the Iranian armed forces and was fired by Hizbullah or as Fox seem to have suggested, it was actually launched by Iranian forces operating in theatre.

Thanks for bringing some humor into this heavy and dark thread:

"Billy Carter had some dealings with Omar Khaddafi in Libya.

Bob Hope had a line that "the main difference between Jimmy Carter and his brother was that Billy had a foreign policy."

Ruh Roh.

Iran is doing everything they can to trigger the larger conflict, just like NK.

I have been worried about this scenario for awhile. Which scenario? The one wherein all these components to the axis of evil start firing at us and our allies from all sides while the big guns stand aside & wait for an excuse to move in against US and/or to split our allies off and isolate the US as much as they can.
