It was a neosocialist "makework"/mass transit project to begin with.
It *could* have actually been a commercially sound venture, but they chose another path.

Look on the bright side...
...The Chunnel didn't have the same contractors as the American Kennedy Chunnel ("The Big Dig").
If you're gonna do something that makes absolutely no financial sense, that costs $billion$, then you really need a government to do it.

Apparently they haven't been meeting traffic forecasts. I'll have to see if I can find what they charge. I'll bet terrorism is a part of it, too. That's probably caused some folks to avoid using it.

Jeepers, it ain't cheap. Between one and two hundred pounds for a one-way car trip from Folkestone leaving this week. Ouch.

No problem!
Just nationalize the thing, penalize Microsoft on a yearly basis for something or other, and use the hundreds of millions obtained from that to subsidize the chunnel.
Problem solved.

Let's see: the EU constitution is dead; they retired the Concorde; Airbus is in political and financial trouble; and now the Chunnel is proven to be equally a bad idea, so, shall we follow the liberals into the wonderland of socialist France, where we can obtain its disasterous rate of growth and huge unemployment as well? At least if we are unemployed we still will get our vacations - all at the same time in August. Tre chique

Hey, you arrogant American! There are good things in France too. Did it conveniently slip your mind that minimum wage is due to become $10.47/hr.? That's great./ sarc
