N.Korea Has Eight Medium-Range Missile Pads: NIS(Taepodong-2 is also prep'ed)

N.Korea Has Eight Medium-Range Missile Pads: NIS

The secret service says it has spotted eight launch pads for medium range missiles in North Korea. National Intelligence Service Director Kim Seung-gyu told a parliamentary committee Wednesday the launch pads were believed to be for Rodong-2 or Scud missiles.

The NIS believes the missiles can be fired from the pads within three or four hours of preparation but the likelihood that they will be is small, a member of the National Assembly’s Intelligence Committee said.

The NIS chief was quoted as saying that a long-range Taepodong-2 missile North Korea test-fired on July 5 exploded some 40 seconds after launch, and debris was found in inland areas west of the launch site. Asked if the North is likely to test another, he said trailers carrying parts were spotted around the assembly and maintenance building at the Musudanri missile base in Taepodong, from where the first was launched, and support vehicles are constantly going in and out of the site. The NIS also says there are some 30 missile fuel storage tanks near the launch site but it cannot tell if they are new or empty. That could suggest plans for another test launch, but it is more likely that the North is trying to find out why the first missile failed, Kim was quoted as telling lawmakers.

Another Taepodong-2 launch is theoretically possible within five to seven days once the North solves the technical defects, but this could take weeks or even months, he said.

Artillery is also a stationery target. You know in advance what the enemy's retaliatory capabilities are, so you take them out at the same time............

I think that at this point the Administration is keeping their cards pretty close. No sense giving the Dog Eater any tips about what our real capabilities are.

I suspect that we were probably seconds away from launching intercept missiles against the NK ICBM launch on the 4th of July, but the ICBM failed so soon in it's flight that missile intercept was not required.

I still give it fairly good odds that the missile failed because of something we did to it. I won't speculate further on that thought other than to say it would not be the first time that we were surprized by some new secretly developed weapons system.

I think that if North Korea launches another ICBM, and if it is able to maintain itself during the boost phase, the US will shoot it down, or at least attempt to shoot it down with one of the Aegis class cruisers that are in te area.

I think that another un-announced ICBM test by North Korea ought to be cause for the whole facility to be destroyed. Not just the launch pad, but every building on the site.

I think the President has been correct and restrained so far, and is actively pursuing all available diplomatic means. He is being nice...until very soon from now, when it will be time to be not so nice.

Don't underestimate what this President is capable of doing. Giving the Pot-Bellied, Dog-Eating, Tin-Horned Little Dictator a proper ass-kicking has got to be high on the President's "To Do" list. He's going to do it right.

Not even considering that this is an area over the Sea of Japan of transit of fully loaded commercial airliners from Europe to Japan and East Coast US to Japan, not to mention maritime movements. When they launch as they do, they jeopardize many people and are clearly in violation of international law. It is a shame that one frikkin week has passed now and we still don't have a UN resolution (not that the UN is the solution to all our problems of course).

Dubya has a good track record of beating his adversaries who underestimated him. The last one is Kerry. I You are right that we should not underestimate him. He is a good poker player.

I suspect that you've never served in an artillery unit. (I have.) U.S. Field Artillery practices "shoot and scoot", the old black and whites of artillery pieces firing constantly from a open position are obsolete. Accuracy is hardly an issue since Seoul is an area target.

I'll betcha dollars to donuts that the NK people's Army has thousands (literally thousands) of field artillery survey benmarks all over North Korea from which they can immediately bring accurate fire on to any point within range of North Korea. I would also be surprised if North Korean agents haven't planted thousands of feild artillery benchmarks in the South as well.

There are close to 2000 artillery tubes positioned and operated by the KPA along the DMZ, for use in massive, concentrated one day attack on the South.

Nah,just read up on your history and you'll see that things are going on as usual.

Yep, the only real difference is the siege weaponry the thugs are using has gotten significantly stronger and better. 7th century mentality with 21st century weapons. Bad combination........

I suspect that NK has their long range artillery in caves and bunkers to haul out and fire. To deliver the amount of ordinance they need to obliterate Seoul, they need the ammo ready at the gun position. I doubt they will use "Shoot and Scoot".

And, I also have spent a lot of time on the gun line.

correction, missing a "1". Meant to say 12,000 artillery tubes along the DMZ.

Scuds are launched from mobile "Transporter-Erector-Launchers"; essentially huge trucks. I believe that the "Nodong" missiles are essentially improved Scuds, and also launch from mobile platforms. The longer range (in design, anyway) Taepo-Dong missile is much larger, and is fired from a fixed launch pad.

...the old black and whites of artillery pieces firing constantly from a open position are obsolete.

We are talking about NK, not the US or modern artillery practices. I bet the emplacements haven't changed much since the Korean War..........
