Report: Rockefeller in grave condition
Associated Press | July 11, 2006

Posted on 07/11/2006 9:13:05 AM PDT by HAL9000

Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller is in grave condition at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences following a second unsuccessful bone marrow transplant, according to the Web site of the weekly Arkansas Times.

In a posting by Editor Max Brantley on the site's "Arkansas Blog" on Monday, the Times cited multiple sources for its report, and said pneumonia has complicated Rockefeller's condition. Rockefeller spokesman Steve Brawner, when told of the Times' report, said he wouldn't release specific information about Rockefeller's condition out of respect for his privacy and that of his family.

UAMS spokeswoman Leslie Taylor said Rockefeller's name wasn't listed among hospital patients.

Rockefeller, 57, returned home to Arkansas on Saturday after a second bone marrow transplant for a life-threatening blood disorder failed to produce encouraging results.

The son of the late Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller, Win Rockefeller cut short his plans last summer to campaign for the Republican nomination for governor, saying he had been diagnosed with myeloproliferative disorder.

The lieutenant governor received a bone marrow transplant Oct. 7, 2005, through the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and a second transplant March 29 after the first operation was unsuccessful.

Hi, I'm a Rockefeller. I'm going to move into your backwater state, and it's your obligation to give me high political office.

Why do the people in West Virginia and Arkansas fall for this? These people are Northeast liberals through and through, they don't care about the chicken farmers and the coal miners.

Win Rockefeller, Lt Gov of Arkansas (since 1996), is the son of the late Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller, of Arkansas, who served from 1967-1971 and died in 1973 of pancreatic cancer. He's also the great-grandson of the late John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil.

He is also the cousin of the "esteemed" Senator J D Rockefeller IV from West Virginia (also the great-grandson of the late John D. Rockefeller and also Nelson's nephew), who gads about and tell foreigners things he knows. Yeah, you remember. Probably didn't even send a card to his cousin, he seems that type.

One a Democrat from West Virginia the other a Republican from Arkansas. Both from one and the same large (and sometimes on the outs with each other) family. Politics is interesting.

Best wishes and prayers for the Lt Gov.

Winthrop Rockefeller brought the Republican Party to Arkansas. It was non-existent before his arrival. Today, we are benefiting from the two-party system he established here.

His son, Win Paul, is a good conservative man. He was my candidate for Governor until his illness forced him out of the race. This is a terrible tragedy for him and the State of Arkansas. I pray for a miracle for Win Paul.

Too bad; the wrong Rockefeller, from the wrong state, is in extremis.

His father was a hero. No, he was not socially conservative. But he suffered greatly. He went up against "The Machine". That machine clawed, and stabbed, and insulted, and dishonored, and picked at him. His victimhood destroyed it though.

Without Winthrop Rockefeller, Arkansas would not have any Republican Party at all and much of its limited advancement is a direct result. He was a great, great, man.

His son has worked tirelessly for the state to bring economic development and use his connections for its benefit with no benefit to him. He has also been a great contributor to the Boy Scouts and to Heifer International. A charity that teaches people to fish rather than just feed them.

The Rockefellers who left it all behind and came to a mountain-top in remote Arkansas have done good things. I am greatly appreciative to them.

I read a book a number of years back that seemed to say that Winthrop Rockefeller was the Rockefeller you would like to know and do business with ... very different from his brothers (back east).

Sure, rich people can move. But what I resent are those who move to a state so they can take it over politically with their outside wealth, while not really becoming "of" the state they try to take over. They instead bring Connecticut or NY to that state.

Example: The Bush family moved from Connecticut to Texas because Papa Bush was involved in the oil industry, not to find a place where they could easily get elected using their family wealth. Baby Bush grew up there, and absorbed Texas mannerisms and culture, becoming more Texan than Yankee in the process.

Nelson Rockefeller at least stayed in NY where the family made its money and where the kids were raised. Tell me what the business reasons were for Jay Rockefeller and Win Rockefeller to be in WV and Arkansas? They went there for one reason, to gain office from the local rubes, and then use that in Washington, or to extend the family influence. It was even good for the family to have representatives on both sides of the aisle.

Now, the libs are going to carpetbag throughout the nation in order to try to capture the Senate, and people here will wake up one day to see rich libs in Montana, SD, Idaho and a whole lot of small states in place in the Senate. The practice should be exposed for what it is, or maybe we ought to do more of it ourselves.

I'm not from Arkansas and don't know the political history there, but from what conservatives here are saying about Win Rockefeller, it sounds like a conservative carpetbagger earned a governorship the same way that Jay Rockefeller won his senate seat. He did good things with it, great. I still don't like the practice. We are going to have Gates' and Buffetts' in Senate seats throughout this country in a few decades in the same way. If they spread their wealth around to the local peasants, I guess that would be ok.

Now, if Buffett establishes a global headquarters in Tennessee, and his kids get raised there, and then they run from there, that is the natural process of migration that of course happens in this country. Rich people are of course allowed to move. I resent them moving somewhere in order to gain high office. The people they are attempting to fool ought to resent it, too.

Reminds me of the way the British sought to gain control of Ireland. Send the second sons of nobility over, take over the land, change the allegiances. Over several generations, their descendents indeed became "Irish" in their speech and some "went native", but others maintained a British outlook. Either way, mission accomplished for Britain.

I'm not Irish by the way, and not one of those who criticizes the British for Irish history. It is what it is, two competing cultures in close proximity, and one won out. But I am an observer of demographic history, and sometimes tactics used in past centuries can be seen again in our time. It's not government policy, as it was in Ireland, but private families making these decisions over time will have a similar effect, if they get away with it. Look at the dynasty that was being created in Arkansas.

Why did the elder Win Rockefeller move to Arkansas?

He was more of a do it yourself person and wanted to get away from both the expectations of family and the benefits of family. He was a cowboy boot guy in an Armani suit family and didn't really fit.

When he arrived in Arkansas he was pretty much a loner and did not involve himself that much. But then a little newspaper in a small town was being pushed around by the Sheriff (the guy who wrote the book, "How I Stole Elections"). Rockefeller started supporting them and then ended up in reform politics.

That is my understanding.

You don't have much Arkansas history knowledge. Your characterization is way off.
