Blind cricketers secure historic victory for Jamaica - Beat Barbados to win first ever regional tournament

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

JAMAICA GOT an unbeaten half-century from Iroy Johnson and defeated hosts Barbados by five wickets to win the first ever West Indies Blind Cricket tournament yesterday.

Playing at the Carlton Sports Club, Jamaica made 196 for five from 27.1 overs in reply to the Barbados total of 192 for seven from their allotted 35 overs.

"It was worked out, it was planned, we just did to Barbados what had to be done to make us champions," winning coach Vivalyn Lattie-Scott told CMC Sport after the game.

Boasting a 100 per cent win record entering the final, Jamaica won the toss and decided to field.

They quickly reduced Barbados to 56 for six, but a seventh-wicket partnership of 99 between Anthony Cummins (44) and Walter Yearwood (20) helped Barbados to a respectable total.

FIVE WICKETS FOR GARDINER

Bowling for Jamaica, Tous-saint Gardiner collected two wickets for 26 runs from seven overs as most of Barbados' wickets fell as a result of fine out-cricket by the Jamaicans.

Making light work of the Barbados score, player of the match Johnson led the way with 54 not out as the Jamaicans won with almost eight overs to spare.

Damian McLean contributed a valuable 30 to the Jamaican total, while Ricardo Manning was the most economical bowler for Barbados with figures of one for 37 from six overs.

The player of the tournament award went to Trinidad and Tobago's batsman Ulric Andrews with a total of 524 runs.

Guyana's Oliver Kerr and Granville Carter, of Barbados, also picked up awards for the B1 category of totally blind players.

Kerr won the B1 batsman award and Carter collected the B1 bowling award.

Jamaica will host the second West Indies Blind Cricket tournament next year.

Barbados had to settle for the runners-up position, as Jamaica captured the first ever West Indies Blind Cricket championship.

Barbados was defeated by five wickets at the Carlton ground today.

Winning the toss Jamaica sent Barbados in to bat, and they set a target of 197 for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 35 overs.

Jamaica in reply made light work of the target finishing with a score of 196 for five off 27.1 overs.

They finished the tournament unbeaten.

Elroy Johnson with 54 not out captured the player-of-the-match title, while the player of the series was Ulric Andrews of Trinidad and Tobago.

This is absolutely astonishing...I would never have thought that it would be possible for totally blind people to do something like this. In the video it looks as though they are having no problems at all.

hmm, i checked in just to make sure "Blind cricket" was some type of cricket played by folks who can see but had to put the whatsit over the whosit in some special manner. Like a Blind ante in poker ;)

I had the same worries....not knowing anything about cricket I also checked around to be sure...in fact, it's directly stated in this sentence from the latter part of the posted Gleaner article:

It makes me feel pretty humble about some of the things that I may have trouble doing.

I have only ever seen blind cricket demonstrated on TV. As I recall they used a ball which contained rattles. However, you would not want to play the regular game if you are blind. I remember a batsman being killed when hit with a cricket ball over the heart.

That's very interesting, thank you.  The idea of them using a ball with rattles in it takes a bit away from the amazement that I was feeling but not much...it's still incredibly impressive that they are able to do this.

The type of injury you refer to is known as blunt cardiac trauma, and it is becoming more commonplace (or at least the diagnosis is).  It is happening more and more here in the USA in baseball, and can cause a heart arrhythmia, an infarction (heart attack) even in children, or even a torn aorta (blunt aortic trauma) which is frequently fatal..  So it's best to keep your eye on that ball   :-)

Next year the Cricket World Cup will be held in the West Indies. If you get a chance to watch I am sure you will find it an interesting game. The one day game is very fast.
